Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. I see this as an excuse for a romantic movie marathon. (Although, really, who needs an excuse?) A couple of years ago I had asked readers on my blog to recommend their favorite movies. Here are the top ten favorites in alphabetical order:
An Affair to Remember (1957) — starring Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant
Beauty and the Beast (1991) — a Disney animated masterpiece
Casablanca (1942) — a classic starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman
French Kiss (1995) — an uptight woman romps through Paris with a jewel thief
Persuasion (1995) — a second chance at love story by Jane Austen
Sleepless in Seattle (1993) — a movie inspired by An Affair to Remember
Slumdog Millionaire (2008) — a critically acclaimed tear-jerker
The Last of the Mohicans (1992) — a dramatic adventure starring Daniel Day-Lewis
The Princess Bride (1987) — a wonderfully strange fairy tale
When Harry Met Sally (1989) — a witting and insightful look about relationships
I prefer romantic comedies over the tragic love stories. French Kiss is my favorite and When Harry Met Sally is a close second. I could watch those movies again and again.
Is your favorite romantic movie on this list? Which movie would you recommend? Tell me in the comment section before January 31, midnight Pacific Time. One commenter will win a $10 USD Amazon e-mail gift card. Good luck!
UPDATE! Congratulations to Cathy W. Her name was chosen using random.org to receive the Amazon gift card. Thanks to everyone for sharing their favorite romantic movie!

“The Princess Bride” and “Beauty and the Beast” are on my list of faves, too. I also like “Amelie,” “10 Things I Hate About You” and “The Proposal.”
No I don’t see it on the list but I have a few…
My Best Friend’s Wedding, How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days,
And The Wedding Planner.
I haven’t seen Amelie but I enjoyed the other two movies you mentioned.
I would have to add FATHER GOOSE with Cary Grant & Leslie Caron. It’s absolutely wonderful.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS make my list.
I enjoy watching Cary Grant. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Father Goose. I need to re-watch that.
What a great list. FRENCH KISS is such a favorite of mine. And THE PRINCESS BRIDE, well, now, some would think that is just a comedy, but so much more is in that film.
I haven’t seen FATHER GOOSE in such a long time! Need to watch again.
One movie I have seen quite a few times recently and just love starring Hugh Jackman and Meg Ryan: KATE AND LEOPOLD (2001).
My twin sister loves KATE AND LEOPOLD. She’s such a Hugh Jackman fan.
Last of the Mohicans is my favorite on your list. Love that movie.
I also like 13 Going on 30 with Jen Garner and Mark Ruffalo and It Could Happen to You with Bridgent Fonda and Nicolas Cage.
I haven’t seen IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU. I need to look that one up.
Oooh, great list! Thank you for the reminder about French Kiss – that’s one on my list to see!
Aladdin is one of my favorites, as is Gross Anatomy. (Silly, but still.) The Hired Heart is another fun one. Nothing earth shattering, but all “feel good” movies!
Aladdin has such a sweet romance. I loved seeing the musical production when it came to Seattle.
Beauty and the Beast is one of my favs… Ever After is another fav movie of mine!
I love the fairy-tale themed movies!
Thought of a couple more – Witness with Harrison Ford and Romancing the Stone with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.
ROMANCING THE STONE is a classic!
One of my favourites is Sleepless in Seattle.
That’s a great movie. I think I like any movie by Nora Ephron!
A WALK IN THE CLOUDS
THE OUTSIDER (Tim Daly, Naomi Watts, Western),
FIRELIGHT (Historical w/ Sophi Marceau and Stephen Dillane)
FOR LOVE OF THE GAME (Kevin Costner)
LADY CHATTERLY’S LOVER
NEVER BEEN KISSED
So many movies I haven’t seen! I need to rent these.
My favorite on this list would have to be Beauty and the Beast. Princess Bride, Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry met Sally would all be after that. I love romantic comedies the most. While I love the drama I have to be in the right mood for it. Titanic and The Notebook can make me cry every time and sometimes I would rather laugh than cry.
Have a wonderful night!
I admit that I haven’t seen TITANIC. I think I’m the only person on earth who hasn’t but I know it would make me cry.
I loved the Korean movies titled Art Museum by the Zoo and The Classic, and American movies titled Sunset and Sunrise.
I haven’t watched any Korean movies but I do see a lot of Bollywood movies. I think I need to start branching out
“A Room With a View”. I saw it when I was about 16 (it’s about a young woman who was about that age, too). Julian Sands STILL makes me swoon (thinking about how romantic it is…he doesn’t make me swoon anymore, but as a young woman…he was the ideal).
Any Jane Austen movie. Take your pick
I love A ROOM WITH A VIEW. It’s so beautiful. The kiss between Julian Sands and Helena Bonham-Carter is my favorite cinematic kiss.
I like beauty and the beast.
I think the Disney movie is my favorite version!
I just have to add another one of my favorites with Cher and Nicolas Cage, MOONSTRUCK. Love that movie!
That’s a great movie. Cher cracks me up–and I thought the family was so funny
Like beauty and the Epbeast,
The notebook, love actually, pretty woman,
Good choices
Great prize thanks
Go niners
PRETTY WOMAN was a fun movie. Loved it
Hi Susanna. You have listed some great movies. I also like Dirty Dancing, While You Were Sleeping, and Jerry McGuire.
I watch WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING around Christmastime. It’s my go-to holiday movie.
Mine is Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrimore. I also love Don Juan De Marco with Johnny Depp. Both are excelent and I could watch them over and over again. Oh and don’t forget Dirty Dancing. The original with Patrick Swayze. You have to admite he was HOT in that movie and it was one to remember.
I should have proofread because my post is full of typos. LOL
Patrick Swayze was so hot in DIRTY DANCING. That was a great good girl/bad boy romance
From your list I love Casablanca. The PBS Masterpiece version of Persuasion (2007) is a favorite. Some more that I love are It Happened One Night (1934), Pillow Talk (1959), Lover Come Back (1961), The Big Sleep (1946), A Place In The Sun (1951), and Adam’s Rib (1949) are just a few that I love.
I adore PILLOW TALK. I think it’s my favorite Doris Day movie. Although I recently saw MOVE OVER, DARLING and thought that was cute, too.
I really like While You Were Sleeping, it’s one of my favorites.
I think WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING is a sweet and romantic story. And Sandra Bullock is so adorable in it.
I really don’t watch a lot of movies now. A few of my favorites from days gone by are Dirty Dancing, West Side Story, An Officer and a Gentleman and Pretty Woman.
WEST SIDE STORY is so sad! I always cry at the end.
Phantom of the Opera- love triangle
Pretty Woman
Beauty & the Beast
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is so dramatic! Really dark and intense
Well my favorite movie is Grease and I guess that is a love story. I also love Beauty and the Beast!
GREASE is a lot of fun to watch. The songs stay in my head for days after watching the movie.
Ooh wow, thank you!!
Some great movies suggested here. Lots of ones I haven’t seen in a while, and some I’ve never seen. I’ve got a list now for when I head to the video store.
