USAF Fighter Pilots

USAF Fighter Pilots

My very first Blaze is being released next week and I’m so thrilled, I could pop the cork off a champagne bottle with sheer excited energy. Though you can’t really tell from my cover (not a complaint—I LOVE my cover!) my hero is a US Air Force fighter pilot. Or at least, he used to be. He was shot down and permanently grounded from an injury. I dedicated this book to the men and women of our military who risk their lives so we can live free. And especially to those who’ve given their lives or been injured in the service of their country. And I’d like to dedicate this blog to them also.soldier-w-prosthetics1
I did a LOT of research for this book. I have a friend whose husband is a colonel in the Air Force, and I also spoke with two wonderful female Air Force personnel—one of whom was one of the first female fighter pilots back in the 70’s. Is this F-22 not the coolest?

Here’s an interesting fact about the Air Force. Did you know they don’t have just one official motto? Like “The Few, the Proud…” or “An Army of One”. For a while they tried “AIM HIGH”, and now the PTB have declared “USAF: NO ONE COMES CLOSE” is their slogan. But where the Marines have “Semper Fi”, the Air Force doesn’t really have anything. The closest I found was, US Air Force Core Values: “Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do”.
But no matter the slogan or motto, men and women in the military put their lives on the line every day for others. If that’s not a hero I don’t know what is. Perhaps that’s why we love to read romances with heroes and heroines serving in the military. Can there be anything more romantic than someone who’s willing to give his or her all? And not just for their country, but for you.

I heard about a study conducted and the results read on Oprah that said what a woman wants most from a man is to be desired. I have to agree. There’s nothing sexier than a man who desires you and no other. Put a uniform on that man and you’ve got the perfect combo: A tough, honorable soldier who desires you and only you. Or in my case, my heroine. Of course, Blaze heroines like to take that uniform right back off again. Or perhaps take off their own uniform…

So, other than serving in the military, what makes a hero sexy to you?

A sense of humor. I love a hero who can do the kind of 1940s movie repartee with the heroine, or anyone else, and who sees the funny in his own actions or mistakes.

  2. Great blog! I do so love a man in uniform. I think for men, what makes a hero sexy is a man who loves his woman and isn’t afraid to show it to her. A man who has a sense of humor but also kind of a dark side. And he will also be totally Alpha male. MmMm. :)

Thanks for sharing and looking forward to your new release!

    Hi Jillian,
Congratulations on 1st Blaze release! To me, the honor, dedication and determination to keep our country free is the draw. It’s those men and women who sacrifice their lives daily in the honor of freedom. With their service, their is no higher gift. I thank God for them daily and with each new day, pray for their safety.

I must say I agree whole-heartedly!!! There is nothing as sexy as a man who desires you beyond all else. But a strong man who knows when and how to be strong for an equally strong woman is quite sexy as well. Not to mention a man who is manly enough to allow you to see his vulnerabilities–mmm mmm sexy. Or someone who is secure enough in his own skin/manhood that he cares nothing of anyone’s opinion but yours — also very sexy. I could go on and on….

  5. This comment if from a chapter mate who tried but couldn’t get her comment to post. She emailed me and asked if I would post it for her:

  6. Hi Juliet, I find a man who delivers on his promises–even when the going gets tough–to be very sexy. Congrats on the new release!

Great post, Juliet! To me, my heart always flutters when a hero does something heroic. Like, maybe the heroine’s getting pestered by someone in a bar, the hero intervenes…sigh. I love a hero who “rescues”. Then I love a heroine who turns around and gets ticked off because he did that. Call me fickle!

  8. Marilyn says:

Your blog title sums it up nicely — this IS something about a man in uniform.

I love heroes who aren’t afraid to either show their fear of babies or show how well they can handle one. A tiny baby can bring the most Alpha hero to his knees but then make him strong again. Am I making sense?

During WWII, my father was in the Army Air Corps , which later split off and became the Air Force . I have some old photos of him in uniform as well as photos of him just in civilian flight gear. Those fly boys sure are handsome.

  9. Anyone willing to risk himself to care for someone else is sexy to me. Especially when that someone has a body to die for. ;-) Congrats on your release, Jillian!

    Tracy G.

  10. Jillian,
Congratulations on your first Blaze! From my own experience, I know those fly boys are great dancers. Members of the armed services, men and women, enjoy a good time and rescue those in need of help. Incredibly courageous people.
I’ll be looking for your book!

The second on the left, front row looks like my son! When was this taken?

You bet we all can be proud of these young men, and women. And it’s nice to know there are so many at home that truly appreciate their efforts. They are from a different mold, I will say. They only do it for all the right reasons, and for all of us, not for them.

When someone gets to love one of them, we are truly the luckiest people on earth. (U)

  12. Addison Fox says:

    Great post, Jillian!

And congrats on your first Blaze! I can’t wait to pick it up.

Hmmmm, so what makes a hero sexy. I have to say, your comment regarding the poll – that women want to be completely and utterly desired above all others – that pretty much does it for me. There’s something so romantic about being desired for exactly who you are.

    Addison

  13. Jennifer says:

Great blog. And how great you dedicated it to our men and women in uniform. We all owe them a great debt.

And on less serious note..I love a man in uniform! I am actually not sure I can put a finger on exactly why…maybe it’s the aura of control- that he can protect you no matter what. Or the idea that he’s gone interesting, dangerous places and yet still comes home to the heroine, where he can still be vulnerable with her- and only her.

In any case, I love reading about military heroes. Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this book! Congrats on your first Blaze!

    Jennifer

  14. Congrats on your first BLAZE Jillian. I hope it’s the first of many!

I love focusing of these brave men and women.

    Good luck!

Good post Juliet. I love anything military and the pics are yummy. Congrats on your first Blaze. May it be the first of many more to come. :-)

    Hi Jillian,
Congratulations on your first Blaze! Great post.
A sense of humor and dependability make a hero sexy.

  17. Sandy J says:

Congratulations, Jillian! I am so excited for you on your first blaze! My idea of a great hero is one that has a part of himself he will never share with anyone else other than the woman he loves.

  18. Congrats on your first Blaze. I have my very own copy in my hot little hand! I got it at my local Waldenbooks yesterday!!!

My hubby was in the Air Force long before I met him, but I have a few hot pix of him in uniform :) Sense of humor and loyalty are two important characteristics for a hero.

    Great post!

  19. Thank you, everyone, for all the kind comments and well wishes. I’m so lucky to have such wonderful friends and colleagues. (*)

  20. Late to the party! Okay, I’m going to add a couple of other uniforms – police and firemen!

Their smile and laugh are things that attract me – a sense of humor. Yeah, that can make a man really sexy. (H)

  21. Diana says:

Kinda superficial, but I’m a sucker for the dark hair and blue eyes combo.

  22. Diana says:

Want to add, congratulations on your first Blaze!

  23. Sally says:

Congrats on your first Blaze, Jillian/Juliet!

And, mmm, thanks for that SEAL pic. Delicious!

As for your question, I can’t even begin to narrow down what makes a guy sexy to me. I’m not a hard girl to please. :D

  24. Pamela Stone says:

Jillian, congrats on your first Blaze. As one of your critique partners, I would just like to tell everyone that this is a very cool book.

Having two sons and a daughter-in-law who recently served in the US Army and a dad who was a flyboy during WWII, there is just something incredibly romantic, honorable, and chivalrous about a man or woman who is willing to risk their own lives for the safety of their country. And as for the earlier remark about them knowing how to party, I’m not sure whether I loved my dad’s stories about being a tail gunner or how much fun he had jitterbugging his way through the war.

    Just something about those uniforms.

  25. kh says:

very nice congrats on teh book

love men in unifrom and out

  26. First of all, I’m so excited about your new release!!!! I can’t wait to pick it up. Second, this was really cool. And third, men in uniform. Sigh. Just lovely.

  27. Jillian, mega congrats on your first Blaze! My youngest son was in the USAF, ground crew on F16s, and my dad was USMC. I love a man in uniform, but also one who makes me laugh.

    Happy release!

    Light,
    Nancy Haddock

  28. Nicole S says:

Congrats on your first blaze book!

The guys in uniform put their lives on the line which makes them attractive, but to me it’s gives them a sense integrity. They know how to treat a woman right.

  29. Krista Lash says:

Congrats on your new book. I want you to know I expect a signed copy. As far as the bad boys! Love them, Love them, Love them! I’ve always loved a man in uniform especially one in the military. I’m really looking forward to reading your book. :-D
