I’m sure many of you have heard more than you can stand about RWA’s recent national conference. You’ve read the serious business discussions, reminisced about gatherings gone-by, and of course, celebrated the Harlequin ball where I threw out my hip doing the Time Warp. But don’t be afraid! What follows is NOT a serious discussion of market trends. Neither is it a lengthy discussion of my hip injury that is now much better, thank you. Nor will I rhapsodize about Harlequin’s offering of chocolate or how unexpectedly nervous I was to sit next to Brenda Chin at the Blaze lunch. (She’s wonderful, by the way, and I don’t know what my problem was.) No…what follows is…well, a story about how terrible my friends and I are, and how one must be very careful about “market trends.”

Chris Keeslar
Now I must say that I was NOT at this year’s spotlight. I did NOT hear the forthcoming exchange. But I DID participate in seeing that the harassment continued. Mostly by posting all about it on this blog.
During the workshop, Chris was talking about fantasy romance. (Hopefully, he mentioned DRAGONBORN and DRAGONBOUND by Jade Lee).
He mentioned that he had not seen any unicorn books lately. This was not a request for more unicorn books, just a comment. However, a fabulous author decided this was a perfect time to tease Chris. Cindy Holby (Prism winner for TWIST) tweeted the urgent news that Chris Keeslar was DESPERATE for unicorn manuscripts. It was a joke. It was, however, picked up within moments by the Twitter community.
Not ten feet outside of the workshop, Chris was stopped by the first person to offer him a unicorn manuscript. She had heard that he was desperately looking for them. Cindy Holby was right there and burst out laughing because, as you all know, Chris’ in-box will now be filled to the brim with unicorns. I have since offered him a unicorn manuscript of my own. Sue Grimshaw of Borders Books promised to email Chris and ask for details on this new trend in unicorns. Feel free to contact him through Dorchester’s website, facebook page, and/or Twitter. (www.dorchesterpub.com) I’m sure he feels he needs to know your unique twist on unicorns.
The funny thing is…I’m sure he’ll end up finding one. Somewhere in the piles ane piles of gleaming white horses will be a gem manuscript. Hopefully, he won’t have to wade through tons of magical fluff before finding it! And…btw…THANK YOU CHRIS for being such a good sport!

Too funny! This also explains the unicorn comment in Sue Grimshaw’s workshop. That was the first I’d heard of it and remember thinking, “Unicorns?” :-S
And it was good to meet you, Jade!
Did she really? Too funny! And it was fabulous meeting you Heather!
What can I say. I am never one to miss an opportunity to tease Chris who will I am certain find a great unicorn story. And yes he mentioned Dragonborn and had the cover up for all to see
I actually have this unicorn story idea that I haven’t written yet… hmmmm…. lol. (I’m serious. It’s been in my head for a few years now.)
Hope that hip is doing better now, Jade, and I’m glad I got to have dinner with you on Saturday night. Especially fun was seeing you dissolve into fangirl goo over the Dresden Files guy. (Those books are on my TBR pile. Can’t wait to dive in.)
Maybe we should post further on the internet that Chris wants unicorn books. Surely his inbox isn’t THAT full yet.
Hmm… I saw the “unicorn” tweet and said at the time that seemed odd. Now I know why.
That is so funny! By the way Jade – love the cover – it reminds be of the old Edgar Rice Burroughs book covers.
Susan–it was AWESOME hanging out with you, even if you did tease me mercilessly about my Jim Butcher fan girl moments.
And Liz…yes, I think the artist did that on purpose. Chris actually asked me what I thought a good cover might be, and I suggested the classic pose of “Girl climbing Guy’s leg”. If it worked for Princess Leia, then it could work for my heroine Natiya! Speaking of which…check out this link for comic con’s princess leias! http://starwarsblog.starwars.com/index.php/2009/07/25/a-lotta-leias-at-comic-con-2009/
I was sitting next to Cindy at the Dorchester spotlight, and all I can say is *she would not be restrained*! Not that I tried too hard. LOL!
And now I’m bummed I left the Harlequin shindig before they did the Time Warp. Great party!
Too funny!
Jade, I’m putting your DRagon books on my must buy list. How did I not know about these?
Oh, and I have this unicorn romance idea…
Restrain Cindy Holby??? Bwahahahaha! Not possible! And Jillian…I hope you like them. DRAGONBOUND is probably the best thing I’ve ever written. (so far! LOL)
It’s a YA novel, but Diana Peterfreund has a new twist on the unicorn in Rampant. http://www.dianapeterfreund.com So you know, y’all might be on to something. I mean, if you can shapeshift into a dragon… There is that big ol’ *horn* you know. LOL
I have to admit, when Chris said that, I almost snorted soda out my nose as one of my WIP’s (already has a home) features a unicorn and a vestal virgin type.
Needless to say the unicorn is paying penance for being a bit of a (cough, cough) horny devil.
On Saturday, while doing a drive by signing at a local bookstore…I had a unicorn shapeshifter novel pointed out to me. When I go back on Tuesday for the new releases (she refused to sell me an early copy of Alexis Morgan’s newest – argh) I’ll get the book!
Then I’ll mail it to Chris with a note that says I LOVE JADE LEE’S BOOKS!
I’m sure he’ll appreciate it. (H)
And I’m sorry I had to miss National this year. I love to dance, have never put out a hip doing it, altho, last year a tree fell over onto the table that I’d just vacated. (D)
Bonnie
Jade/Cindy/Colleen: See what happens when I’m not there to keep you guys in line??
Hee hee, not that I could.
Poor Chris.
I’m sorry to hear about the hip, Jade, but glad to know it’s better.
