I thought it might be fun to give you a bit of a heads up on some of the new TV shows coming this fall. That way you can plan your DVR time accordingly and have lot more time to read wonderful romances like those written by friends over there to the right of this blog post. :)

I’m going to share with you the 11 new shows on Broadcast TV that will be making it onto my DVR for at least a few more episodes. If you see them here, it means I liked the pilot and want to give it another chance. These are in no particular order. You’ll notice I seem to like the ones that have a paranormal or romantic elements. I can’t imagine why. If you have questions about new or returning shows, post them here. I probably have scoopage for you.

1. Vampire Diaries (CW, Thurs., Sept. 10) Kevin Williamson (Dawson’s Creek) brings L.J. Smith’s books to life. While it may start out a little Twilighty, it takes a different turn very soon into the series. Love the casting in this one. Nina Dobrev is a great Elena, and Paul Wesley embodies Stefan. He has that very old soul look about him.

2. The Beautiful Life (CW, Wed., Sept. 16) from Ashton Kutcher is going to be one of my guilty pleasures. It’s hot young models who discover the glam life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I like it far better than the revamped Melrose Place the CW is doing. Though the latter will get more press.

3. Eastwick (ABC, Wed., Sept 23) is loosely based on the film by the same name. It’s about three women who discover they have more control and power in their lives than they could have ever imagined. I want to hate Rebecca Romijn for looking so great after having twins, but I just can’t. This is a great cast and a fun show. And I love the New England feel of it.

4. Flash Forward (ABC, Thurs., Sept. 24) Joseph Fiennes stars in this unusual series. Everyone in the world passes out for a couple of minutes and many of them have a glimpse into the future. It’s cool how this whole thing unravels and how the stories tie into one another. Cool concept and great pilot. I can’t wait to see what they do next.

4. Cougar Town (ABC, Wed., Sept. 23) Don’t judge this one by it’s name, it’s not at all what you would expect. Bill Lawrence (Scrubs) helms this comedy with edgy humor and great comedy talent from Courteney Cox and the rest of the cast.

5. Modern Family (ABC, Wed., Sept. 23) This is a mockumentary comedy that shows there are all types of loving families. It’s slightly twisted and yet heart-warming at the same time. This one made me laugh out loud more than once.

6. V (ABC, Tues., Nov. 3) You’re going to have to wait awhile for this remake with Elizabeth Mitchell, Morris Chestnut, Scott Wolf and a great ensemble cast. The effects and the story telling in the first episode are stellar. I can’t wait to see more.

7. The Good Wife (CBS, Tues., Sept 22) If you told me three months ago that this show would be on my list I would have called you crazy. But that was before I saw the pilot. I will tell you right now it is so much more than the advertising makes it look. The writing is superb and Juliana Marguilies had finally found a role that does her justice.

8. Glee (Fox, Wed. Sept. 16) I heart this show so much it hurts. There is great music, a talented cast and great story telling. I’ve seen the first three episodes and I am in love with this show so much I want to send it a box of candy.

9. Community (NBC, Thurs., Sept. 17) This ensemble comedy featuring Joel McHale and Chevy Chase is clever, and it made me laugh out loud. McHale holds his own, but it’s the ensemble cast that makes this show come alive.

10. the forgotten (ABC, Tues., Sept. 22) I haven’t had a chance to see a full pilot of this series starring Christian Slater, but I’m curious about the premise. It’s about civilian volunteers who dedicate their lives to finding the names of the Jane and John Does. And they almost always solve a mystery or two.

11. Human Target (Fox, Jan. 20) Okay, so we have to wait until next year for this one, but it’s so much fun. For those who like a healthy dose of action adventure this is the ticket. Mark Valley, Chi McBride and Jackie Earle Haley star.

    (C) My new favorite show this fall which actually started a few weeks ago is HBO’s Hung~ Desperate times call for desperate measures and Ray Drecker’s situation couldn’t be much tougher. The former high school sports legend turned middle-aged high school basketball coach is divorced and struggling to provide for his kids when his already run-down house catches fire. Looking to take on a second job, Ray decides to exploit his best asset in a last-ditch attempt to change his fortunes.

He becomes a male prostitute! It really is a great show! ;-)

    I recomend this one! ;-)

I think Eastwick and Modern Family look like they’re going to be good. I’m going to give them a try.

  3. Ooh, Candy! I’ve been anxiously awaiting your return from LA and the chance to read your report on all the new and returning shows! Love this list, thank you! My question is about my favorite new show from last spring: LIE TO ME . I remember you saying before you left for LA that you would be interviewing the cast for that show. So? Did you get to speak to them? It IS returning, yes? Do you know when? What did the cast have to say? Also, I loved SOUTHLAND. Any news about that? Hmm… maybe we need a report on the RETURNING SHOWS next time you blog. :-$
    Hugs!

    • I did get a chance to talk to the “Lie to Me” folks. They have a new cast member and the show will definitely be back on Sept. 28. They sort of figured out what works and what doesn’t and you’ll see some new relationships with some of the characters.

The same goes for Southland, which comes back Friday, Sept. 25. It’s on a new night, and most of your favorite characters will be back. But they are changing things up a bit. :)

      • Laura Lee says:

Stephen and I adore Lie to Me. Missed the last two episodes on TV and online so we just netflixed them. Looking forward to it (and House!)

  4. Megan says:

I’m excited that you’re excited for Glee, Human Target, Modern Family, and Community. I think I’ll give Vampire Diaries a try, even though I’ve never read the books. I’m crazy excited for Glee and I’m happy that Chi McBride will soon be back on my television!! (L)

  5. This is a great list, Candy! I don’t have time to watch much TV these days, what with the obsessive writing and all, and it is nice to have you do all the hard work of filtering it down to the few worth watching :-) It doesn’t hurt that I love the paranormals, too… Thanks for sharing!

  6. Aelle Ables says:

You know, Candy, that I’m going to miss some of my summer favorites. True Blood season finale is in two weeks, and Warehouse 13 has been a lot of fun. Its good to know that some new fare will fill in the gaps.

I was wondering what you would think of Flash Forward — glad to hear it looks very promising! I have to admit, I’m favorably inclined to try it out because I can’t imagine it would have attracted that cast with a bad script.

    Will you be at FenCon?

    • Hi Amy,
I will be at Fen Con. The first five minutes of Flash Forward, I was little un-wowed, but then Holy Cow! They way it plays out and they weave these stories together. It makes you think. There is mystery and intrigue. It left me begging for the second episode. :)

  8. Samantha says:

    Glee premieres Wednesday September 9th

  9. Julie Harrington says:

Eastwick sounds interesting. My mom was a great fan of the film, but I don’t think she knows it inspired a series. I’ll have to mention it to her. I like all things “witchy” ;) so I’m sure I’ll give it a shot.

I’ve been looking forward to Cougar Town ever since I heard Carolyn Henessy was going to have a part on it. I love her work on General Hospital as Diane Miller — so funny and amazingly talented! I’m looking forward to seeing her on something else since the soap has become the height of Anti-Romance. Sigh. Ah well.

I’m interested in seeing how the new NCIS: LA series plays out. They have some good actors on there.

I admit to rolling my eyes a bit when I saw they were remaking V. I remember loving the series back in the 80s but it drags on and on…. I might give it a peek this go round just to see.

Vampire Diaries. I’m in the air. I liked Angel and Buffy, but I’m not a vampire girl. I just… there’s something offputting to me about :-[ as heroes. Don’t know what it is. The ads looked good for this series but enough for me to tune in? We’ll have to wait and see.

Human Target is one I was really looking forward to. That one sounds like fun.

As for returning series, I’ll toss in NCIS and Burn Notice. I’m excited about both of those.

    Julie

    • Julie, I’m very fond of the cast of the new spin-off NCIS:LA. They are a great group, and I think this show will be a little different in tone, though still have some of that humor that the other one has. :)

  10. Sasha White says:

I remember the first V series, and am eagerly awaiting this remake. The Beautiful Life and Eastwick sound great too. Thanks for the heads up.

  11. Liz Matis says:

Out of these I’m looking forward to Flash Forward the most.

  12. Nikki Duncan says:

Now how is this list supposed to give us MORE time to write? lol I personally am looking forward to Glee, have been after the first episode.

  13. Linda Henderson says:

I’m looking forward to NCIS and the new spin-off NCIS to begin. I liked Southland also. My grandkids are looking forward to the Scooby Do show that comes on the 18th of September. Can’t wait for that (its a good thing they are too young for sarcasm). And I really hope Castle is coming back. I really enjoyed that show. And that one with Simon Baker, the name escapes me at this time, where he works with the police solving crimes. And I’ll be curious to see what happens on Ghost Whisperer.

    Linda Henderson

    • Castle is back. I did a set visit with those guys recently. Such a great cast and a fun show. :) The Mentalist is the one with Simon Baker.

And I happen to like Scooby Doo, which probably explains a lot about me. We have an English Mastiff/Great Dane and my kids named her Scoobie (ie for a girl). LOL.

  14. Hi Candy,

What about Grey’s Anatomy? It’s been uneven–anything good planned?

    • Shonda Rimes, the creator and head writer for the show, says she believes they are back on track for this new season. Of course, she would say that. But she did talk about that with Ellen’s pregnancy, they had to really work on telling more of the other characters’ stories. Katherine Heigl (Izzy) will be back for several episodes. There was a lot said about her wanting to leave the show because she wasn’t getting the greatest stories, but I actually agreed with her.

  15. Jenn Stark says:

Candy, what a wonderful post! I confess that I’ve dropped way off the TV spectrum, but I was so curious to see V coming back that I have to take a look. And I’m so curious about The Forgotten… It seems like the writing is stronger with this set than in debuts in years’ past, so we’ll see how long they last. Thanks very much for this list!

  16. Liz Matis says:

Is V the one with the aliens who appear human only to find out they are reptile? If so – I can’t wait for that one too!

  17. Paula R. says:

Hi Candace. I like some of the shows you mentioned and will probably watch them. Flash Forward looks interesting…The Forgotten and possibily Vampire Diaries. Now, V, is that a remake of the THE V from the late 80s early 90s? I absolutely loved that, and I have it on DVD…where the big saucers come and the aliens act humans until some people find out what they are really there for…If it is, I would totally love to see it, just to see what today’s technology would do with it. Trauma is another one that I think would be good too. Modern Family looks like it is going to be funny too…

    Peace and love,
    Paula R.

    • V is a new take on the old series and from what I’ve seen, a lot of fun. I wasn’t Trauma’s biggest fan, but I see the appeal for people who like those kinds of shows. It is non stop action. :)

  18. Erika says:

Trauma, 3 Rivers and Neighborhood (I think) The one directed by Ron Howard are the ones I want to check out. I love my medical dramas… Nurse Jackie on Showtime is turning into something pretty good, I think next season will be even better with some deeper character development and more drama… I can’t wait to find out when The No. 1 Ladies detective agency starts again–thats my fav new show hands down.

    I LOVE DVR.

BTW, do you know why USA didn’t renew The Starter Wife? I thought Debra Messing won an award for that?

    • The Ron Howard show keeps going through name changes, but I think right now it’s Parenthood. I liked it, but it needs work. If you are into medical dramas then you will most definitely like Three Rivers. I do like Alex.

Starter Wife ratings fell off in a big way last season. They kind of wore that concept out. I love her, but I think it worked better as a mini series. I don’t think No. Ladies Det. Agency is coming back since Anthony Minghella, who initially spear headed the whole thing passed away. But HBO didn’t say no exactly. So who knows?

  19. Andrew Pelt says:

    omg, Damon is hot!
