I went to the fair on Monday with my family and have to admit that it’s not the atmosphere or the rides or the games of chance that bring me back year after year.

It’s the food.

Fair food. Is there anything else more decadent or sinful? I love the cotton candy and corn dogs, the fried corn and funnel cakes. I managed to restrain myself from getting a turkey leg or chicken on a stick, but couldn’t resist thed deep-fried Snickers bar, a chocolate-dipped frozen banana and I brought a caramel apple (with nuts) home with me. The deep-fried candy bar was a first and I LOVED it. Warm, gooey, powdered-sugared goodness. Yum. And to think it’ll be another year before I get to have it all again. (Which, actually, is probably a good thing. :-) )

So what about you? Any favorite fair food or fair memories? I always loved getting my picture made in the fake jail cell when I was little and have about half a dozen photos to prove it. (Sorry, won’t post them. That was during my “sponge roller” phase and the hair… The hair is nightmarish. Eek…. )

;-) As a teenager I worked in a cotton candy stand when the fair came to town and I also worked in our local burger stand operated by the high school band as a fund raiser.
As an adult I discovered deep fried twinkies,. Yes, I said deep fried twinkies! :-D They take a twinkie and dip it in funnelcake batter with a stick inserted like a corndog and then deep fry it. Yeah, natures health food… NOT! ;-) It is oowey goowey good! (Y) (Y) :-D

Hot dogs and cotton candy, those were my favorites. I’ve never tried a funnel cake although everyone tell me they are yummy. Bring on the deep fried snickers bar. I’d like to meet up with that. I wonder how they keep the chocolate from melting ?

Patsy, I saw the deep-fried Twinkies! Those looked good as well, but I couldn’t resist the chocolate.

Linda, the Snickers is dipped in Funnel Cake batter, then fried. The inside *does* melt and it’s *wonderful.* :-)

One of me favorite fair foods is fried dough.

Funny you should mention fair food. This past weekend we were talking about the local Harvest festival coming up and all the yummy food they always have. I’m more into the corn dogs and polish sausage myself, but my daughter loves funnel cakes. Well, being the “love to try a new recipe” kinda girl I am, I decided to give the funnel cake thingy a try. They turned out great and were delicious, but….there is a reason they call it FUNNEL cake. You need one. And I didn’t have one. I had batter from one end of the kitchen to the other. Using a large kitchen serving spoon to drizzle batter will not work. Trust me. It makes one h#ll of a mess. :-O
Darn it Rhonda, now I’m going to have to google deep fried snickers just to see how it’s done. LOL

Oh God, I love fair foods. Elephant Ears topped with either Cherries or Chocolate. I too love carmel apples and Gyros and funnel cakes and lemonade and you get the picture…can’t leave summer without them.

But I have to say I am not on board with the whole deep fried twinkie/ candy bar thing. They just sound like a heart attack waiting to happen to me. I can’t decide if they sound disgusting or addictive. Either way, I’m not chancing it!

  7. This year, the Texas State Fair will have deep-fried butter! Yes! Here’s how they’ll make it: ” . . . scoops of pure butter the size of golf balls are frozen and covered with dough and dropped into the deep fryer. The butter is infused with grape, garlic or cherry – or you can just have it plain.” :-O

I read about this fried butter thing and wondered how that would work. Doesn’t sound good to me and talk about “heart attack waiting to happen”!!!!! :-O
I always went for the cotton candy but it’s been so long since I went to a fair they didn’t have most of the “food” they do now. :-(

Wow. Are you going to test any for us, Heather?

I like the fried dough… but I think they call this same thing a funnel cake now, yes? But it can only have powdered sugar on it. I’m a purist when it comes to topping. A friend put cinnamon on a shared piece once and I had to run back to the counter for my own. :-O

As for the fake jail cell pics, Rhonda, my husband likes to stage his own. We have a wide variety of scenarios from over the years on film… our three sons are always engaged in some kind of jailhouse brawl. Now that they are bigger, they can hold one another upside down for really extravagant staging. I’m never present for this, but I have photographic evidence of each and every year. No doubt they scare everyone away from this part of the fair…

The San Gennaro Festival is coming up and I usually go for the cannoli, zeppole and sausage sandwiches.
