There’s nothing quite like the Blues to cuddle up next to on a cool, cloudy day like today. Such passion. Such longing. The music not only encourages daydreaming and wistful sighs and sentimental journeys, it requires them.

.

The genre also exemplies the emotions we strive to achieve in each and every of our Blazes. Whether it be the lighter songs like Ain’t Misbehavin’ or Love Me or Leave Me for our more comedic endeavors (and that’s relatively speaking, because both of these selections also have a dark side that I love jumping into with both feet creatively), or the heavier pieces like Trouble in Mind or You Don’t Know What Love Is for our more emotionally driven stories, we can always rely on the Blues to help set the right tone. Especially the ladies of the Blues. While Billie Holiday tends to be a little too dark (I end up getting pulled into her story instead of the one she’s trying to tell, although it could be argued that they’re one and the same), Etta James, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan and even more modern songstresses Norah Jones and Joss Stone transport you to a rich pit of emotion just begging to be mined.

So on this Sunday, we invite you to take a musical ride with us and see if you’re not equally as moved!

I do enjoy Joss Stone, I just watched her on Dancing With The Stars. She has a wonderful voice.

    Hi Lori and Tony,
Thanks for posting a great Etta James video. I watched it and then had to listen to At Last too. Great music for a Sunday afternoon.

Hey Tori, I love the Blues. I have a lot of Billie Holliday, one or two Vaugh and James. I also have Nina Simone. You are right, when I listen to Billie Holliday, I really get caught up in her story rather than what she is singing about. Here is a poem I wrote, in honor of the Blues…I hope it comes through…

    The Blues

The blues, there ain’t nothin’ like the blues
    Aquamarine, azure, aqua and teal
All signifiers of what a person feels

The blues, there ain’t nothin’ like the blues
Sea-green, the colour of mixed emotions
Magenta, teller of anger and pain

The blues, there ain’t nothin’ like the blues
Blues, the soft lilting sound of songs long gone
Stories of lives rendered and torn

The blues, there ain’t nothin’ like the blues
Wails of anguish filled with silent despair
    Resonating off club walls

Deep and sultry are the sounds of the blues
There ain’t nothin’ like the blues

I hope that you all have a wonderful rest of this lazy Sunday. The sun is out today, and it is much warmer. Yippee!!!

    Peace and love,
    Paula R.

  4. Joss has an old soul, Linda, and a throaty voice to match. To have that kind of musical depth at such a young age is phenomenal! I missed her performance on DWTS but was delighted to learn of her introduction to a whole new audience. She deserves it.

  5. So beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing your poem, Paula. I love your touching use of colors to represent the genre.

    Muaw muaw, sweetie!

Thank you…sorry for the weird symbols…I did a cut and paste…I guess I should also check before I post when I do that huh. I am glad you liked the poem.

      Peace and love,

I like the blues, my aunt got me hooked on Sarah Vaughan, I know its about women but I like B.B. King and Muddy Waters. I like that kind of music, its a feeling kinda of music that you need to beable to connect with. I’m in a weird mood today, and I’m trying to get into a better mood. It was nice hooking up with you.

  7. No need for apologies, Paula. I so understand. It took me nearly an hour to get the original post to, well, post correctly because of formatting difficulties. And even then, I discovered errors as a result of my ‘fixes.’ Drives me nuts!

  8. Carole, I hear ya on the weird mood. It’s been a strange day. Effects of the full moon, maybe? I don’t know. I usually don’t wish for any day to pass quickly, but find I’m doing it today. I feel…splintered, somehow. Unsure of which way to go and what do do. So I’m going here, there and everywhere, and doing a bit of everything, with no set destination in mind, and nothing getting finished.

Love B.B. and Muddy! I named my Mustang after B.B.’s guitar. The late Stevie Ray Vaughan knew his way around the Blues as well, and I’m partial to Jimi Hendrix’s take on the genre (over his rock).

But when I’m looking to tap into my more feminine yearnings and cravings, the women do it for me in no time flat.

Hope your own ‘blues’ lift soon…

  9. You’re very welcome, Tammy! For the older artists, there isn’t much footage available for viewing (at least on YouTube), so usually you get a static image of say an album cover. I was glad to find this video rendition of the song.

Hi, Lori & Tony, I love Sarah Vaughn’s singing. Do you remember TIME (think that’s the song title–was a huge record for her)?

Have you ever read Ruth Wind’s (aka Barbara Samuel’s) non-traditional Romance entitled IN A MIDNIGHT RAIN? It concerns the h/h (who met through their love of the Blues), race relations, the Viet Nam War & finding one’s roots. If you haven’t, I’d really recommend it, as it’s one of the most unusual (& touching) stories around.

    Best,

    Patricia

  11. Thanks for the recommendation, Patricia! We’re honored to call SisterB a dear and longtime friend, but admit to not having read all of her books. Will have to look into this one, though!
