I have been put on shoe restriction. I went to a movie with a friend this weekend and came home with an amazing pair of black Coach patent leather heels. My husband did not understand that these were on sale (70% off on sale!). He did not understand how these heels were different from the six pair already in my closet. He did not understand why I needed – yet another – pair of shoes that I will likely only wear a handful of times a year. Men!

In my defense I have been hunting for new black heels for 2 years. I kid you not. The ones I currently own (well, the ones I normally wear) are a 15 year old $10 Payless purchase. I love those shoes but they’re ready to be put out to pasture. I think I’ve gotten my money’s worth. But I’m picky when it comes to shoes. I know what I want and I’ll look until I find it…preferably on sale. I might not wear them every day but that’s how they last for 15 years!

Hubby is always asking me to clean out the shoes in our closet (and in the shoe racks at the back door). He just doesn’t understand that I can’t get rid of any of them. Yes, I need all five pair of black boots that I own. Some are high heeled, some are low heeled, some have a rounded toe, some a pointed toe. They are all different. I don’t even think he notices when I wear the darn things. I think he just sees black boots and thinks I’m wearing the same pair over and over again while the other four get dusty.

So, I’m on shoe restriction. Of course, he’s been on animal restriction for years and we all know how well that’s gone (the guinea pig is pregnant. Sigh). I’ve been eyeing a new pair of leopard print Yellow Box shoes on Zappos. Think he’ll notice when the UPS guy drops off the box?

Do you have a shoe addiction? Or do you wear a pair of shoes until they fall apart? Have you ever been banned from something by your significant other?

Yes, I love shoes. I don’t know if I’d call it an addiction though. I am picky and take my time in fidning just the right pair. I’m a Florida girl…I love girly flip flops and high healed sandals. Not so crazy about pumps or any other closed toed shoe. If I have a pair that fits great and looks great, I’ll wear them until they fall apart. If they’re black or a neutral color that goes with almost everything, super comfortabel and they’re in clearance at some fabulous, unbelievable price, I’ll get two identical pairs, so that when one wears out, I’ll have another pair ready to go.

And what comes after shoes? Purses! Same concept. Love them, but I am picky. When I find the right purse, I’ll use it until it’s shredding apart. I try to swap them out, so that I can use all the different ones I have and love, but sometimes you just get into a rut and end up using the same purse over and over for a while.

Right now I’m not so focused on the purse as I am on the diaper bag. But that’s out of necessity. I just had twins. They’ll be 3 months old tomorrow. So there’s no time to swap out purses. My “swapping time” is for bibs, burpers and bottles…etc.

    Have a great day everyone.

    Debbie G.

    • Congratulations on the twins, Debbie! I had enough trouble trying to keep up with the girls one at a time. I can’t imagine trying to handle two at once.

I’m less of a purse girl than I am a shoe girl. I mean I like purses. And I do tend to buy expensive ones (on sale) that will last. I carry the same one probably for at least half the year because I just hate the process of switching everything over. I will admit to a fondness for Coach though. However, I only ever buy from the outlet store. This limits my purchases which hubby appreciates. :-)

  2. I (L) shoes. I didn’t always – I had such a hard time finding them in my size, but now the internet has opened my eyes and I can’t turn back. I am a shoe-o-holic.

DB is silly. How could he be mad? They were Coach! On 70% off! Hello! And you have a Zappos gift certificate from your birthday. It would be wasteful not to use it. In this economy, you can’t afford to be wasteful. ;-)

I don’t have the purse thing, but I’m going to a party this weekend that have these purses where you can change the outside but you’re still carrying the same purse. I’m intrigued because I hate swapping between one and the other. I just might develop a purse thing…

    • Ooohh. You’ll have to tell me how these purses work. Yeah, I keep telling myself the purchase wouldn’t be too bad since I have the gift certificate. I think maybe I’ll wait a couple weeks before I order though. (H)

  3. I TOTALLY HAVE A PURSE THING. I THINK I HAVE A PURSE IN EVERY CONCEIVABLE STYLE AND COLOR. But sometimes you need a back-pack purse and sometimes you need a big purse and sometimes you NEED a purple purse and sometimes you NEED a clutch. Right? If loving purses is wrong, I don’t want to be right. My husband and I have been trying to pay down CC debt this year and put ourselves on a Book restriction.
Well, THAT flew out the window within the first month.
Do we REALLY NEED to give the kids Christmas gifts this year? ;-)

    • You can always buy them books. (H)

See, that’s my exact argument with shoes! Sometimes I need that pair of red peep-toed pumps. They don’t exactly go with my everyday wardrobe but when I need them I need them. And until I do they sit quietly in the closet and wait. Hubby – who owns 3 pair of shoes, 2 of them probably with holes in them – just doesn’t get it. I wonder if it’s a man thing or just mine.

  4. I don’t get why men think NEED comes into it when it comes to our shoes. Mine counted the pairs I own last year. Not nearly enough of them to my way of thinking.

When you wear a hard to find size anything that actually fits ends up coming home. Sometimes the only place I can find an 11 is Payless. And I really don’t get it. Girls are way taller than they used to be. Shouldn’t size 11 be the new 10?

I walked the whole downtown core a couple years ago to find a comfy pair of slides for conference. We walk so much, change clothes so often, that you really need to think about footwear. At the end of the shoe-less day, I saw a Payless at the corner. YUP, there they were: the perfect pair. Wide elastic criss cross bands and a decent heel…shoes to make it through days of heavy use.

When I was at the Blaze signing I saw two readers wearing the very same pair. So, there you go: Blaze readers are the smartest, best-dressed women you’ll see anywhere. LOL

    Cheers, I’m off to a conference as I type this…. (D)

I have to admit the shoe gene skipped me. I mean, since I started going to conferences, I own way more shoes than I used to. (And don’t get me started on my Yellow Box flip flop obsession) But I have 1 pair of black boots. 1 pair of brown boots, etc. I have worn the same pair of sparkly silver Nina’s for every RITA night that I’ve attended. After all, that’s the only night they get worn. I just buy dresses around them. ;-)

    • Have you seen the yellow box shoes?!? I’m so tempted. I love my blingy flip-flops so much. Seriously, we need to get you to DSW more often. That place can instill a need for more shoes in anyone.

  6. Bonnie, my sister of the feet! I wear 11 AAAA, but rejoice when I find AAA and settle for AA with pads. I’ll never get to wear Jimmy Choo, Manolo, or Christian Louboutin because they don’t make them in my size!

Kira, you SAVED money. You bought classic, high-quality basics. Remember Silence of the Lambs and the cheap shoes? Maybe your hubby should watch it again. :-)

I wear the same pair of shoes until they fall apart and then I buy the same shoes new. Ok I have a really good reason for that. One leg is 2″ shorter than the other and I spent 37 years standing on a concrete floor teaching teenagers. See where I’m going here???? Feet and legs are in bad shape and I wear walking shoes now so I don’t hurt. But even before all my problems I had a tendency to wear only a couple of pair of shoes.

    • You’re being practical. There’s nothing wrong wtih that! I know I should be. I’m going to be paying for my high heel obsession for a very long time. But they’re so pretty… I do wear the same 2 or 3 pairs of shoes most of the time. I tend to wear my tennies, my ballet flats or my flip-flops depending on the weather. But you never know when you might need midnight blue heels!

I am most certainly a shoe person. I have collected a rather large collection over the years but I am very careful with my shoes. I keep them clean and put them up when I am not wearing them.
Every pair I have was bought on sale. I don’t usually buy trendy styles of shoes. I like classic and comfortable. I learned a long time ago that an expensive pair of shoes can hurt the feet and the pocket book as much as a cheaper pair you find on sale.

There are some years that I don’t buy many pairs of shoes. But the years the shoe designers are right on the money and the stores are having the right sales I load up for the dry years. (*)

    • Load up for the dry years. I love that! I need to remember that argument for next time. :-) I am picky when it comes to shoes. While I love pretty things I tend to go for styles that will last. I might have one or two trendy pair that I just couldn’t say no to but mostly they’re simple and elegant.

I’m not a person who’s knowledgeable about shoes. I just love sneakers and flip flops. I do have one pair of dress shoes for special occasions. I do keep my sneakers and flip flops until they fall apart.

    • I couldn’t survive without my flip-flops! I’ve lived in my 2 pair of yellow box this summer. So comfy. The huge pink rhinestones and pretty sequins don’t hurt either. Cute and functional. You can’t go wrong there!

Yes, I’m a shoe junkie. But mine are pretty much on sale and never of $50. No, just sneak a pair or two in the house.

  11. This a subject close to my heart. I (L) shoes sooo much! I have pairs that I wear once a year and can barely walk in but just owning them makes me happy (black, pointy toe, deeply curved wedge heel, bought in Paris from obscure boutique – heaven!) My taste is more arty than haute couture but I do tend to buy mostly black shoes. Black goes with everything, right? And I do get looks from my boyfriend when I try on yet another pair of black shoes. “Aren’t those just like the other black ones you have at home?” And the answer is sometimes yes, and sometimes no. And sometimes I walk away, and sometimes I don’t. The thing with shoes is that no matter how big my ass is or how tight the stud on my jeans, I can always fit into my shoes…

  12. Kristi says:

Yes, I have a lot of shoes. And Yes, I wear them till they fall apart. I think the two tendencies are related….

My husband has never attempted to “ban” me from anything. He rolls his eyes and sighs, and occasionally grumps that some of my collections are taking over the house (especially dishes….I’m up to like 4 or 5 sets of dishes…we won’t discuss silverware or crystal…).

But, he’s got a closet overflowing with dead computer parts and decades-old software manuals and has no room to talk.

It works well that way. We both have a small amount of discretionary money that is not accountable to the other person. So what if my dishes are fighting for room with my shoes in the bedroom closet…
