While the Christmas season is a lot of things to a lot of people, in our house, it’s all about movies. You see, my hubby is a huge film buff. In our house, the Academy Awards is an event, and with so many of the Oscar contenders being released during the holidays, we spend a good portion of this time in the theaters.
And when we’re not doing that, our family has several holiday favorites on DVD that we try to fit into our festivities every year.
Here are my top five favorites. I’m curious to know if any of them match yours:
5) It’s A Wonderful Life is my hubby’s favorite, and I have to admit, the dialogue is great.
“Say, Violet, that’s some dress.”
“This old thing? Why, I only wear it when I don’t care how I look!”
Gotta love that line. And no matter how many times I see the movie, I still tear up when Clarence gets his wings.
4) The Homecoming was the pilot to the Walton’s TV show, and anyone over 40 will tell you how huge that series was. For years, families across the world said goodnight to each other by throwing in the line, “Goodnight John Boy!”
I think for us, the movie is sentimental because of the old TV show. Set during the Depression, it also give us cause to feel grateful for the simple things we have, to be thankful, because we know from our parents that times really were that tough back then.
3) A Christmas Carol blends my two first loves: Christmas and creepy movies. As a kid, I grew up with Night Gallery, Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, so having a Christmas movie with ghosts and chains was always right up my alley. My only debate that remains is which version I like the best. There have been so many, and to this day, I still can’t decide. I only know I DON’T like the musical. Scary ghost movies and Oliver-style music just don’t mix.
2) Charlie Brown’s Christmas is my second most-favorite show for two reasons. One, because I grew up with it. (Heck, is there anyone on the planet that didn’t?) So it brings me fond memories of childhood to watch the show every year.
But the other reason I love this show so much is because my son fell in love with it as a toddler and absolutely beat the video to death. We were still watching it in May, and in fact, I think we’re on our second copy. So now, not only does the movie bring back my own childhood, it brings me back to the days when my now pre-teen son was a cute adorable toddler who would point to the screen wide-eyed and scream, “Snoopy!!” (sniff sniff)
1) But my most favorite holiday movie of all is about a BB gun. But not just any BB gun, “An official Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time.”
If I could live in another era, it would have been the 40′s, and A Christmas Story epitomizes everything I adore about it. I love the music, the sense of community, how simple life seemed back then. People still believed in things that were honest and good. And though I didn’t come along until 20 years later, I remember Christmas parades and window displays at Woolworths, and the smelly, stinky department store santas.
So tell me, what are your favorite holiday films? Did any of mine make your list? And what do you have that I’m missing?

LOVE ACTUALLY !! I know, it’s not a really tradional Christmas movie but it’s a very good one. Both happy and sad, and full of hope.
I haven’t seen that one. Though we are starting to create a few “new” traditions when it comes to Christmas movies. Elf is slowly eking its way into our holiday line-up. And I’d put Love Actually in a category similar to Its a Wonderful Life. It’s not exactly ABOUT Christmas, but it’s got the holiday theme.
I love – Its a Wonderful Life. One of my childhood favorites is March of the Wooden Soldiers (sometimes its Babes in Toyland) – it was with Laurel&Hardy.
Wow, I haven’t seen a Laurel & Hardy movie in years. They used to all be in syndication along with the Three Stooges, the Marx Brothers and WC Fields. I used to watch them all when I was a kid!
My all time favorite Christmas movie is White Christmas. Every year my mom and I would watch it at least 2 or 3 times. We also love all 3 of The Santa Clause movies with Tim Allen. Now with 3 kids ages 9, 5 and 3 I watch alot of cartoon christmas movies like Polar Express and Mickey’s Christmas Carol. But I do hope to get my kids into White Christmas, we will see how it goes.
Also Hallmark and Lifetime always have really great holiday movies. I can get sucked in to a full day with those, lol!
Alina, I love the Hallmark holiday movies! There are some quiet jewels in there that don’t get the notoriety I think they deserve. I always remember a movie I saw as a kid. I think it was called The House Without A Christmas Tree. It starred Jason Robards and I haven’t seen it in years.
There are a few movies on there that I really love. The Christmas Card is a great one, A Boyfriend for Christmas is really cute, A Christmas Visitor is wonderful, Single Santa seeks Mrs. Clause is really good too. I could go on and on, lol. Two new ones on that channel that I am looking forward to are Mrs. Miracle and The Three Gifts. They both look like really great movies.
My mom is crazy about A CHRISTMAS STORY
–but then, she’s a child of the 40′s and a lot of it resonates with her.
My hubby’s favorites are A CHRISTMAS CAROL (He likes the old Alistair Sim or Patrick Stewart versions best) and A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS. (that’s on my list, too–I love when Linus tells the Christmas story, that sad little tree that just needs some love ;-( , and singing Hark! The Herald Angels Sing at the end).
I have 3 movies I have to see or else it just doesn’t feel like Christmas. I usually watch them when I’m wrapping presents or just sit down and treat myself if they come on TV to get a break from all the holiday hoopla.
1. White Christmas (love the dancing, costumes, humor, military theme–and it has a favorite song of mine, “Counting Your Blessings”)
2. Holiday Inn (This is another Bing Crosby classic–I like his rendition of “White Christmas” better in this one)
3. It’s a Wonderful Life (Jimmy Stewart is my favorite actor-ever! And I love the message it sends. And I agree, I get teary-eyed when Clarence gets his wings)

I confess, I’ve never seen White Christmas. Or Miracle On 34th Street. Two classics I’ve never gotten around to viewing. I think it’s because the holiday season is so hectic! Or maybe it’s because they all come on at the same time right about Christmas eve. I don’t know, but I think I’m going to try to watch at least one or two this year that I’ve never seen before. I’m with you, I love watching something festive when I’m wrapping presents.
I totally agree about the Hallmark Christmas movies. I love them, I can’t get enough of them every year. My favorite is THE CHRISTMAS CARD. But then again with a hottie like John Newton, how can it be bad? He just makes the whole thing sooooo worth while in my book. Oh, and the story is great too! It’s just so romantic.
I am also looking forward THE THREE GIFTS. Again, Dean Cain, need I say more? I kick the hubby out of the living room and snatch the remote when ever I see the name Dean Cain in a movie’s credits. Just can’t drool properly with him in the room.
My brother’s favorite movie is A CHRISTMAS STORY. So I know that movie by heart also. Oh the memories we share over spouting the dialog over the dinner table. We always got a laugh from our parents.
I made it a goal for this year to watch MIRCLE ON 34TH STREET
Okay, so now I’m definitely on the lookout for Hallmark Christmas movies. Do they show them on the Lifetime network? I don’t know who Dean Cain is, but now you’ve got me curious!
Ooo…love Dean Cain too! I didn’t see that movie THE THREE GIFTS. i will definitely have to see that one!
Okay… that was strange….
AS I was saying…. I plan to watch MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET in it’s entirety this year. I have still never seen the whole thing. And I really want to! It depresses me how I miss part of it every year. I can’t win!
-Pamela J.
I love A CHRISTMAS CAROL, too, Lori and my favorite version is the one with Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard from Star Trek TNG)
Other Christmas faves are THE BISHOP’S WIFE with Cary Grant and an old roamnce made in 1937 called, REMEMBER THE NIGHT. It stars Barbara Stanwick and Fred MscMurray. He’s an assistant DA famous for getting convictions for women and she’s a jewel theif. He ends up taking her home with him for Christmas and… wonderfully romantic.
I, too, grew up watching the Waltons and love The Homecoming, and my mothr’s most famous depression era story is of cutting old bed sheets down the middle where they were worn out and sewing the 2 outside ends together. We can’t even imagine such a thing now. We’d just buy new sheets, right?
I also enjoy the Lifetime and Hallmark movies while I wrap presents and sign Christmas cards. And I , too, think The Christmas Card is my favorite of those.
Oh yeah, Jillian. I’ve heard the stories too–about saving foil and reusing it, not having enough to eat. It really is hard to imagine!
How funny you mentioned Remember The Night. I saw that a number of months ago when I was scrapbooking. I’d just left the TV on AMC and watched whatever came up, and that was one of them. Since it was summer, I wasn’t thinking of it as a Christmas movie, but you’re right, it was!
I’m glad someone mentioned WHITE CHRISTMAS. My sister and I used to watch it together and sing the “Sisters” song.
Sentimental fav is SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS. It features Pia Zadora as a Martian child.
OMG whatever happened to Pia Zadora?
I love, love, love A CHRISTMAS STORY. I watch it every year. A close second favorite is SCROOGED with Bill Murray. It’s funny, dark, and heartwarming all in one.
Other favorites include THE SANTA CLAUSE with Tim Allen, and WHITE CHRISTMAS because I love the singing and dancing.
Those are great movies. I miss Tim Allen since his show went off the air. The man seems to have disappeared!
My favorites are the classics like Rudolph, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Frosty, etc…
Other favorites:
The Polar Express
Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus
The Christmas Toy
Both versions of the Grinch
Mickey’s Christmas Carol
The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus
Oh, I forgot all about the traditional TV shows. Boy, I watched those each and every year for decades. I loved Rudolph, even though I still think it’s kinda sad!
I agree with you wholeheartedly….A Christmas Story is the BEST movie ever. So many great lines and such a realistic family!
I know, I try to even come up with a favorite scene and can’t. There are too many good ones!
I have a few favorites that I try to watch every year. Before I list them I will say that I watched Mrs. Miracle (Debbie Macomber) on Hallmark the other night. It was pretty good. My favorites are:
The Grinch (the cartoon one)
Charlie Brown Christmas
Christmas Vacation
Home For The Holidays (actually it’s more a Thanksgiving one)
White Christmas
Frosty The Snowman
Home Alone (all of them)
The Santa Claus (first one)
Prancer (my whole family loves this one)
Goodness, until I asked the question I hadn’t realized there were so many Christmas movies out there! I’d forgotten all about Home Alone, too. I’m definitely going to have to look up the Hallmark movies and find out what channel I get them on. We’ve got satellite, so I’m sure it’s in one of the 200 channels LOL!
I am with you guys on THE SANTA CLAUSE movies with Tim Allen. They are a riot! I also love,
NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION
RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER
FROSTY THE SNOWMAN
A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS
WHITE CHRISTMAS
MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET
and those old animated shorts of SUZY SNOWFLAKE and HARD ROCK, COCO, AND JOE. These always put in a happy mood because they remind me of my childhood. (G)
A Christmas Story – yuck! I love and still laugh over National Lampoons Christmas Vacation – The prayers that ends as our Nations Anthum! LOL It’s a wonderful Life, and of course – all of the short cartoon christmas specials. It’s not exactly Christmas without them.
