dec vickiHappy holidays, and thank you, Tawny, for inviting me to blog today! I’m excited to be back in the Blaze lineup after lo, these many moons, and even more excited to share the billing with Rhonda Nelson and Jill Shalvis. BTW, Rhonda deserves all the credit for coming up with the Damon Claus concept for BETTER NAUGHTY THAN NICE. She rocks.

So . . . it’s that time of year again. Do you all have your shopping done?

I always vow that this year will be different and stress free. Hahahahaha. I think it’s a holiday rule: No matter how carefully you plan your gift-giving, there’s always that one stinkin’ present that turns into a hellacious hassle. Last year it was a Thomas the Train storage table. This year it’s Ugg boots.

My son gave me the word – my granddaughter wanted Ugg boots, but I wasn’t to get REAL Ugg boots, which would be expensive and silly for a kid who’d outgrow them in six months. He said the fake kind were at Costco at a reasonable price.

Those of you who shop at Costco know the drill. Gift items are here today, gone tomorrow. By the time I got to Costco, those fake Ugg boots were way gone. But was I discouraged?

Well, yes, but this is the season of good cheer, so I contacted my friend Google to search Ugg boots online. And I found some! At a great price! Ordered them with a song in my heart and a Visa card in my wallet! Failed to notice the price was in . . . pounds.

Okay, so the girl was going to get actual Ugg boots from Australia, and it was extravagant, but what the hey. It’s the holidays and the bill won’t come until January.

Except . . . the boots were shipped from China. I could tell because there were Chinese characters all over the packing slip. I’m quick that way. And the box was damaged, although the boots were fine, except they stunk to high heaven. But I comforted myself that at least they’d have that all-important Ugg label on the heel.

Except . . . they didn’t. The label was WHOOGA. Which is an approximation of what I said when I saw it. Had I accidentally paid full price for a Chinese Ugg boot knockoff? And what about that godawful smell? Fortunately I’d saved the web site email address, so I researched returns and discovered that I could, in fact return these smelly, not-labeled-Ugg boots, but I’d have to pay postage. TO CHINA???

Before resorting to such drastic measures, I shot off an email to the company. The reply was extremely civilized and stated that these were, in fact, Ugg boots made by another Australian company with a pedigree as good as Ugg itself, and that all Ugg-type boots were now manufactured in Asia, and that the smell was from the tanning process and would go away in a few days. They apologized about the battered box.

Faced with return postage to China (or Australia, not any better), I set the boots outside to air, and you know what? The smell is gone. The boots are lined with genuine sheepskin and they’re cozy to the touch. My granddaughter isn’t expecting boots with Ugg on the heel. When she sees WHOOGA, she’ll probably think I got them at Costco. I’m giving up on the angst and giving her the boots.

Which gift is keeping you up nights or causing you to haunt the stores or eBay? Or are you all done and feeling smug about it?

DONE! Wrapped! and best of all, delivered! I know. You hate me but I knew I was going to be out of town around Christmas. I had to have everything ready by Thanksgiving so I started buying in September and wrapping in October.

I think it’s mostly kiddo stuff that causes us to haunt stores for the “hot item.” Luckily, my nieces and nephews are past that age.

    How old is your granddaughter?

  2. Judi Thoman says:

I’m done. I bought a really nice doll house at Costco a couple of months ago for Paige, then back to Costco for Wii for Payton. The rest were mostly done online.

    And I was feeling good.

However, I’ve learned my son and his little ones might not be able to join us. While this isn’t unusual since he’s in the foreign service, he’s back in DC right now. And we’d made plans. I bought gifts that won’t fit easily in the mail.

Oh well. I guess I’ll be standing in line at Post Office.

Glad to see you back at Blaze! Happy Holidays!

    Judi/Brit

Done as well! Actually… I was done in August. LOL. Our family only gives to the kids and the kids are all at the age where cash is he best gift around. So that’s super easy. The one gift I did have to buy I pre-ordered a book from their favorite author back in August and now I’m just waiting for it to be released and delivered.

  4. Molly Evans says:

What a funny story! They sound like great boots even if your mad plan didn’t quite transpire the way you intended. Kinda like most of my life. ;) She’ll have fun stomping around in the boots in any case.
    Molly

  5. Wrapped and stuffed under the tree! :) Great blog, ladies. Thanks for the smiles.

    Natalie Acres

  6. Marilyn says:

Waving and sending you holiday hugs. No tree yet, I can’t believe it but I have an injuured knee. Going to get one this weekend. More shopping to do as well but it always gets done! Please give my warm wishes to your beautiful Audrey as well.xx

I have your book on my tbr pile and can’t wait to read it. (K)

  7. Will we be reading about smelly boots in the next of your Hex books? (And I do hope there will be more — I live in Cincinnati, and I’ve been scouring maps so I can go to Big Knob, Indiana and play poker with George and the raccoons!)

Your Ugg saga reminded me of when I tried to buy a Cabbage Patch doll for my daughter. I ended up having it shipped from HARRODS. Yes, in England. Yes, it cost the earth. But you know what? She’s 26 now and she STILL loves that doll!

  8. I forgot to mention, I read the Better Naughty anthology last week. I love the whole Damon Claus concept!

  9. Fedora says:

Wow, Vicki! You rock! Nope, I’m not done (but at least our tree is up and decorated! ;)) Hmm… I don’t recall too many instances where I went to extremes to track down a particular present, but I do recall a couple late nights where I was up trying to finish a gift (usually something for a baby shower or something like that)–that procrastinating thing just never works out well! ;) How did your tree shopping go?

  10. Hi, Cyndi! — Waving at my fellow RWA board member. :-D Yep, I hate you for being all done, but I’ve seen how you work, babe, and I’m not surprised. Oh, and my granddaughter’s twelve. Maybe her feet won’t grow too much more, LOL.

Ouch, Judi! Shopping for mailing stuff is way different than shopping for in-person giving. Plus you won’t get to see the little darlings, either! :-(

Julie, I think you get the prize. August! Whew! Even if you’re doing mostly cash, that’s impressive.(Y)

  11. You know, Molly, I’m not sorry it worked out this way. At least I know her little tootsies will be warm this winter!

So Natalie brings up another issue — wrapping. Yikes. I have NOTHING wrapped. :-O

Hi, Marilyn! Hugs to you, as well, especially because of that knee! ;-( I hate it when my friends get hurt. I will give your love to my darling daughter, and yes, I brought home the tree in my convertible again. (H) It’s way fun to drive down the road with a tree wrapped in a tarp and belted in like a dead body.

  12. Tawny Weber says:

What a fun boot story :-) Your granddaughter’s going to love them, I’ll bet.

I want to be done shopping. I intended to be done shopping. I’m irritated with myself for NOT being done shopping, but there ya go. I’m not done yet. I blame my husband. He keeps changing his ‘want list’ and as soon as he mentions something he’d like, someone else swoops in to whisper “I’ve got dibs on that for him”. Yeah, he’s that hard to shop for.

The other gift I’m in search of is the Disney Princess baby Belle for my niece. I saw it before Thanksgiving and figured I’d pick it up ’soon’. Now it’s nowhere to be found. Procrastination is NOT my friend. :-P

  13. Hi, Becke! Shipped from HARROD’S???? You get the Mother of the Year award for that one! (Y) I know how that sort of thing happens. If a kid wants this ONE SPECIAL THING, and you know it will make their Christmas, you’ll go to the ends of the earth. Which you kinda did. :-D Oh, and I’m sure smelly boots will end up in some story or other, especially because I’m writing about sexy cowboys for Blaze. But when I was struggling with the Ugg issue I sure wanted Dorcas’s magic wand!

Okay, I got my posts mixed up, and it was Fedora, and not Marilyn, who asked about the tree-hauling this year. Sorry about that! I keep forgetting who knows about the Christmas-tree-in-the-convertible gig I’ve made an annual tradition. Fedora, I can’t imagine the pressure of being behind on something handmade and trying to finish it before the event. Oh, wait, yes I can. It’s called a book deadline.:-D

    • Fedora says:

LOL! Oh yes, those… Vicki, thanks for facing down and meeting those book deadlines again and again–you are SO one of my favorite authors and so many of your titles are on the ol’ keeper shelf. Write on!

      And I love that you’re continuing the tree-in-the-shoebox-car gig–woot! ;)

  14. Nicole S says:

I read Better Naughty Than Nice and enjoyed it. Loved all three stories.

I’v got to get my brother a gift-card since he’s so hard to buy for then I’m done. Everything else is all wrapped and ready for Christmas.

  15. Tawny, if I were in your shoes, I’d see if I can get a rush order online for the Disney princess baby Belle. I hate, hate, hate running from store to store looking for something that ain’t there. I did the same thing with LED colored lights, and now the shelves are bare except for white. I like me some colored lights.

Nicole, gift cards are just the BEST. They’ve been my go-to solution many times!

    • Tawny Weber says:

WEeeeeeeelllll, see in the stores, the Belle doll was around $20. Online right now its running $50. I adore my niece, but….

Yeah, I’m gonna have to do an online search. After one last Toys R Us visit this evening LOL

    • Fedora says:

Vicki, I’ll trade you! The only LEDs left in our stores were blue! So we have one strand of white and several of blue–the kids love it, but next year, I’m going shopping for lights earlier! Who knew that this was considered late for lights???

  16. Jennifer Cochran says:

I am pretty much done with my holiday shopping. So far it has not been bad at all. I am sure your grand daughter is going to love the boots. I have some similar ones and they are perfect for winter. Happy Holidays.

  17. Marcie says:

I work for a credit card company and you wouldn’t believe how many fake items are sent from China. Good thing you weren’t looking for the real thing because some people think they are getting the real thing.
That’s the saddest thing about the internet – fake items that are mailed internationally and cost and arm and a leg to return.

  18. Alina Duffer says:

Well, I havent even started shopping yet, lol! My mom comes in tomorrow so then I will get to do my shopping. Shes gonna watch the kids one night so my hubby and I can go and knock it all out in one trip. And its kinda like a date for us, so it works. I tell myself every year that Im gonna do it early and it never happens. As for the gift I dread being able to find, my youngest who is 3 wants a big Rex toy from Toy Story and I havent been able to find it. He’s seen it on tv but I cant find the darn thing. Sometimes tv is just evil showing kids all sorts of things they want and that parents cant find, lol.

And I LOVED the book. Damon Clause was an awesome character, so much fun!

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! (*)

  19. Jane says:

Try to get the popular Zhu Zhu hamster pet. They retail for about $10, but you can expect to pay five time that on eBay.

  20. I’m still at the Christmas-has-thrown-up-in-my-living-room stage. :-O

  21. Bella says:

lol! I know it was stressful but ur tale of WHOOGA has really made me laugh at the crazy crap the holidays can bring. great story.
    (Y)

  22. Sherry Werth says:

Hi Vicki! I’m late checking in today and was happy to find you here! So I’m posting anyway. :-)
Your granddaughter will love the boots! Got a few presents left to buy, then I’m calling it done.
Loved No Mistletoe Required! Just started Rhonda’s Snug in His Bed, but I’ll finish it tonight.
Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

  23. Michele L. says:

    Hi Vicki!

Glad to see you here! Yeah, those Ugg boots are expensive! My niece has a pair of shoes by them. Personally, I can’t see paying that much for a pair of shoes/boots. I am with you on buying the cheap knockoffs.

I have half of my presents bought but none of them are wrapped. Also, I don’t have all my Christmas decorations up yet or my tree. We are always late getting everything up. Most of the time we don’t get it up until Christmas eve because we work so much and are so busy. I have your book, BETTER NAUGHTY THAN NICE, on my To-Buy list! I love anthologies at Christmas time!

  24. Paula R. says:

Hey Vicki, it has been a while since I have seen you around the web. I have this Blaze, but I haven’t started it yet. I am so happy too because it has three of my keeper authors in it. Cool! I will probably read it over break.

Wow, you really went through a lot of trouble to get the boots, but your are right, your grand daughter won’t care. She might even start a trend…lol. Nice seeing you. Have a wonderful rest of the week everyone.

    Peace and love,
    Paula R.

  25. Tammy Yenalavitch says:

Hi Vicki. I just read Better Naughty Than Nice and loved it. You really are a Master Storyteller! All 3 stories are fantastic and this book is a funny and sexy Christmas read. I bought my Ugg boots in the 80’s before they were super popular. I loved your story about your Ugg boot adventure.

I am mostly done shopping, but I still need to wrap. I did a lot of shopping on line this year, so I am waiting for my packages to arrive. Plus, my daughter turns 11 in 2 days, so I have to divide her gifts up between birthday and Christmas. At this point, the Birthday wrapping is a higher priority! (and making Birthday cupcakes!)

  26. tami says:

;-) im doing like subway, and sonic gift cards
