Funny how these things come about. It began at a breakfast meeting in Summer 2008 with long-time friend Kathryn Lye, who also happens to be one of the editors of the Harlequin Blaze line. I met Kathryn years ago at local event where I was forced into teaching line dancing for an RWA outing. It’s a long funny story that maybe I’ll share some time. But the important thing for you to know about that night was that I became friends with Kathryn.
We bonded over television and movies. She was curious about what was coming up for the fall season, and of course I had all the scoop. Each year we tried to get together to say hello, have a meal or watch pilots during RWA. Then that summer in 2008 we had breakfast in San Francisco. As usual we talked about everything from our families to TV to books. She always was kind about asking what I was working on, and I told her that I wanted to try my hand at writing something like the Woman’s Murder Club meets Burn Notice. Sexy detectives and spies coming together and solving cases.
She said that sounded like something that would work for Blaze. I was shocked. She told me to put together a proposal. My agent thought it was an awesome idea, and that, my friends is how the Stonegate Investigative Agency came to be. My idea was that these very strong women who ran the agency would have to deal with cases all over the world. Of course, they’d also fall in love.
Mariska, my heroine in Take Me if You Dare owns the agency that was bequeathed to her by her mother. But it was the hero, who really brought this book to life for me. Jackson is a burned CIA agent and all he wants to do is get out of Bangkok. It was kind of my ode to “Burn Notice” and that sexy Michael Westin (Jeffrey Donovan). Jackson needed a heroine who could hold her own, and that is how Mariska was born. Of course, you “Law & Order” fans know where I stole that name from and it fits this character.
What I like, and yes I know I wrote it, is that even though there are mob guys and intrigue, there is also a lot of humor. Jackson and Mariska are fun, sexy couple, who always seem to find themselves in trouble. I had a blast writing their adventure and I hope you’ll enjoy it too!
I’m celebrating all month and have lots of ways for you to win cool prizes, so be sure to check out www.candacehavens.com. Oh and you can check out the first episode of RAW CANDY where I talk about books, television, movies and celebs at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6B3slnuGVk
I’d like to hear about your all-time favorite romantic couples. Do you have one couple that stands out above all the rest? Tell me, I want to know!

Congratulations, Candace–can’t wait to read the book! SO many romantic couples, it’s hard to choose, but JD Robb’s Eve and Roarke come to mind. Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, and Rhett and Scarlet are other faves.
Jacquie, I like all of those too. Hadn’t thought about Eve and Roarke in a long time. Makes me want to pick up one of those books.
Oh, and thanks for the congrats.
Well done Candace, your book sounds great. My all time favourite couple has to be Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet but I always think outside the box and have to mention Samson and Delilah. As a child their story intrigued me and I often think of the tragic moment when Delilah realises she betrayed the man she loves. Not all love stories have happy endings but good will always triumph over evil.
Jeanette, That is an interesting choice!
I’m not sure if they are a ‘favorite’ but Rosemary Rogers’ Steve Morgan & Ginny Brandon sure have planted themselves firmly in the deep recesses of my mind. It’s been…well, a long time since I read Sweet Savage Love but those two pop to the forefront every now and then.
I’m adding Sweet Savage Love to my list. Love that title!
I have to say some of my favorite couples come from fantasy books rather than romance:
From Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels series: Daemon Sadi and Jaenelle
From Janny Wurts’s Wars of Light and Shadow: Arithon and Elaira
From Romance:
Stephanie Laurens – A Secret Love – Gabriel Cynster and Lady Alathea Morwellan
I like that all of them can be friends in addition to the attraction they have.
ww!
Again, I’ve never heard of any of these, though I have heard of the authors. My book list is going to be very loooooong this week.
Hi Candy, Congratulations on the book. I’m excited to go out and find it. I might look today. I love Brandon Birmingham and Heather, it’s old but ooooh so good. ww.
Lori
Lori, I’ve never read The Flame and The Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss. I’m going to have to check that one out.
Hi Candace! Congrats on the book. I picked it up today and cant wait to read it. As for favorite couples, gosh there are so many. Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy are a good one, and Rose and Jack from Titanic. Then you have Allie and Noah from the Notebook. I’m sure I could go on and on, but there are a few. Have a great day!
Oh, Allie and Noah. You mention those names and I just get teary.
Hmmm…this is a hard one for me. I have lots that I love. I have to say that I loved Letters from Home and The Solider. The characters in the two books were wonderful and stick with me.
ww
Oh, it is hard to narrow down, isn’t it. For the most passionate romantic couple I must say Garbriella Ramos-Viera and Dante Orsini (of the Orsini brothers series on Harlequin Presents)! Bronwyn and Sam (of the Charmed series), for best kick-butt romantic couple! Best classic romantic couple for me would be either Katie and Hubbell or Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant from An Affair to Remember! Take care.
Barb, You mentioned Bronwyn and Sam. I heart you for that. I so want to write more of their story.
I do hope you write more of Bronwyn and Sam! More … more … please! Love them. Take care.
Jackson has been looking at me since I put him on my TBR pile. So many things on my list I am almost there Jackson give me a minute!
Anywho….My fav couples…That list is so long.
Right now I would say it is Drake Vireo and Aisling Grey from the Aisling Grey series by Katie Macalister. However, that is not to leave out… Jane Whitcomb and Vishous from JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood and I so adore Miach and Morgan from the Nine Kingdoms Trilogy by Lynn Kurland.
Of course now having thought about it for more than a second… Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw from Wuthering Heights. Hands down!
ww!
Heathcliff, now there’s a tragic hero.
Misty, I haven’t read either of those. Jeez my Kindle list is going to be long this week.
I’m a fan of Jamie and Claire
in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, especially the first book. It’s one of my favorites. I also love the tension between Mac and JZB
in Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. Can’t forget the steamy, death-defying exploits of the Caruthers sisters
. Looking forward to getting to know sister #3 and her otherworldly (or this worldly) love interest.
Jessica, Right now there are no plans to do another Caruthers sisters book, though I would LOVE to do it. I have five more books in that series in my head.
Candace, congratulations! It sounds wonderful, and your excitement is infectious.
I can’t remember too many book couples either, off the bat — they will pop back to my mind later, though Sophie/Phillip from Nora Roberts Chesapeake Trilogy were favorites, and many of her other romantic couples. Recently, a fan of Mac/Barrons from KMM’s books, though it could be a stretch to call the a romantic couple, in the strictest sense. Cat and Bones from J. Frost’s books, too. Probably a lot more, and I feed bad if I leave anyone out, but I know there are many, many I have loved.
Sam
Sam, I’m embarrassed to say I don’t know who KMM is. Sigh. Can you help me out.
Sam is probably referring to Karen Marie Moning but I’m not positive if there is someone else with those initials.
Candace,
My favorite romantic couple–Sandy and Danny from Grease, Juana Smith and Captain Smith from the Spanish Bride and real life, Stephanie Plum and Joe and Ranger.
That book sounds hot and perfect for Blaze. I love Burn Notice too and Women’s Murder Club is among my favs too. I’m thinking I might need oven mitts while I read the book. I’m heading out to get my copy. ww!
As soon as you say “Grease,” I start singing, “…and my heart is set on you.” That is a sweet couple.
Hmm… I love Eve and Roarke too, as someone mentioned. Basically, I enjoy couples that I feel really have a lives — separately and together — beyond the confines of a book. Rich characterization.
My absolute favorite couple is Daav yos’Phelium and Aelliana Caylon from Sharon Lee and Steve Miller’s book Scout’s Progress. They write fabulous romantic couples, but Scout’s Progress remains my favorite! ww
My favorite literary couple is Elizabeth and Darcy. But, I absolutely fell in love with Jackson. He kept me up very late last night
I kept telling my husband this morning how perfect of a hero Jackson is – he’s sweet, caring, romantic, and totally alpha.
(Sorry for sounding like a crazy fangirl, lol)
Forgot to add that my husband wasn’t very appreciative of my gushing over a fictional guy – I sent him the link to your RAW video with a note to follow the advice you give there. ww!
Carrie, That is the best compliment ever — keeping someone up late.
I hope the RAW Candy video works.
Congrats on your release! And as for book couples, hmm, there are many… Jamie and Claire from Outlander definitely stuck with me long after finishing the book. For TV shows, I’ll always have a soft spot for Pacey and Joey from Dawson’s Creek and Ross and Rachel from Friends. ww!
Awww, Pacey and Joey. I haven’t thought about them in years.
Buttercup and Wesley from The Princess Bride are my favorite couple. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are a close second…
Congratulations on your new release! Loved your video on YouTube (LOL)
Ah, I wondered when someone would mention The Princess Bride.
Hi Candace! Picked r book up the other day! Can’t wait to read it…
Truthfully can’t remember any couples from books.
Like the sexual tension of TV’s Mulder and Sculley, Moonlighting was good too with Bruce Willis.
For movies I loved, loved the Scarlett Pimpernell (spelling? – too lazy to get up and check by book shelf) with Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews -
“Sir you move too fast.”
“My heart detects the pace.”
SWOON SWOON SWOON!!!
Liz, I’ve never seen the Scarlett Pimpernell. I know, I know. I’ll have to rent it.
some spy i am I forgot… ww
Candace, Congrats & good luck on your lst Blaze! I’d love to hear the story of the RWA line dancing.
My fave couple is from Kathryn Shay’s, SOMEONE TO BELIEVE IN. There’s the heroine, Bailey, a Liberal Democratic, 30ish single woman, with a 4-year old son, who runs a shelter & website for teen girl-gang members who want to escape that life. The hero is Clay, a single, 40ish, Conservative Republican Senator, who believes in punishment for gang members. In the prologue he was a D.A. who prosecuted the heroine for withholding info about a gang member, & she spent 1 yr. in jail. Upon her release they argue in the press &, later, are both chosen to participate on a commission to allocate social service funds, & the game begins. This is a mature story of a couple, while having great chemistry, who believe in totally different ways to function in life. It’s great, & the couple by which I measure all others.
Patricia
I’ve never heard of this book. I have to check it out.
How fun! Can’t wait to snag a (signed) copy this weekend. The cover is HOT STUFF!
I probably should have mentioned the book signing. Darn it!
2-4 p.m. Saturday at the Hurst Texas Barnes & Noble.
I have the book–can’t wait until it moves its way up in the TBR pile
And I think David and Maddy are my favorite couple (Moonlighting). My sister and brother-in-law even named their daughter Addison, after David
YAY you for the new release!
Thank you!
Candace, Congratulations. I love both the characters you got your inspiration from. I also like the premise of the book. Sounds like Mariska will kick some serious @$$ like Olivia does, and Jackson sounds great as a Michaelish character. Can’t wait to read this one too.
Peace and love,
Paula R.

Peace and love,
Paula R.
Paula, I haven’t heard of some of these.Thank you!
Candace, I made a booboo…it isn’t Strike and Beth it is Strike and LEAH. Jessica Andersen’s books are the first three in the Keepers of the Prophecy series. LOVE THEM!!! My mind jumped to Wrath and Beth, and my fingers types Beth for Strike’s heroine…sorry!!! I hope you do check it out…Robyn Carr wrote the Virgin River series. I hope that you get the chance to check some of them out. Happy reading, and congrats again.
Peace and love,
Paula R.
Can’t wait to read your book–what an awesome concept!
My favorite couple right now is Sean (John Wayne) and Mary Kate (Maureen O’Hara) from the movie The Quiet Man. I’m so in the mood to curl up on the couch and watch it (again). Love all that sexual tension and fabulous dialogue!
ww!
My vote goes to Noah and Allie from the Notebook. Talk about devoted. Don’t tell anyone…my boyfriend had tears in his eyes watching that movie. Shhhh..he wouldn’t want to ruin his tough guy image.
My favorite couple of all times would be Scarlet and Rhett from Gone with the Wind. Ww!
My favorite couple of all time is Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in Pretty Woman! haha … ww
Congrats Candace!!!
So many great couples in books and movies… one that stands out for me is Scarlett and Rhett. The push and pull of their relationship comes together nicely in Alexandra Ripley’s SCARLETT.
Candy…
LOVE Michael and Fiona from Burn Notice. Also Shanna and Ruark (Shanna), Heather and Brandon (Flame and the Flower), probably all time fav is Nora’s Eve and Rourke…Yum!
