A Brief Commercial Break

Posted by Heather MacAllister in Heather MacAllister, tags: commercials, football, Super Bowl
Sometimes they get it right. Some of my favorites have been the E*Trade Baby, who’ll return this year, the Hulu ad with Alec Baldwin, the Budweiser lizards taking out a hit on the frogs, and the dog coaching a Clydesdale so he can make the team next year. There have been some incredibly bad ones, too. I’m lookin’ at you, MacGruber. SoBe? Football players as ballerinas? Mutant lizards? And you want us to drink your product?
This year’s advertisements are listed here, along with videos if you miss any. Come back after the game and tell me your hits and misses. Tomorrow is okay, too. As a bribe reward, I’ll give away a copy of HIS LITTLE BLACK BOOK, my March Blaze. It’s an Encounters and the first story features a hero deciding on a Super Bowl commercial. How’s that for a coincidence?

Hey Heather, love the bribe…er prize for today’s comments. I used to watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. I didn’t understand football and I didn’t care too much about who won, but if the commercials were cool and the halftime show off the charts, I am there. The last Super Bowl I watched was when Michael Jackson did the Heal the World half time show. I know, eons ago!!! Have a blast today everyone. I will check back in later, to see if I have any company here today.
Peace and love,
Paula R.
Hi!
Re “No one is going to be surfing the Internet on Super Bowl Sunday” — wrong! You have an international audience, so not everyone is into it! I am in Canada. The guys might watch it, but the gals generally go shopping, read a book, or do anything else they can think of. (The only girls I know that watch it are at the Legion with their husbands, but I would bet most are talking throughout the entire game with their girlfriends.) I am taping it so I can see the entertainment. I’d like to see all the commercials everyone raves about, but we get Canadian commercials, so I fast-forward through them (and the game).
See you in 14 hours or so….
Hooray! Paula and Laney have saved me from being the only Blaze blogger without comments!
Laney, with the way the Super Bowl is covered on the news, you’d think it was the only thing going on in the world.
I’ll be watching the Super Bowl, I’m a big football fan. We’re having pizza and I baked chocolate chip cookies dyed to the colors of the teams. I won’t be on later, but tomorrow I’ll come back and tell you which commercial I liked best. I’m always fond of the budweiser horses.
Nicole, you make me feel like an under achiever.
I had a lovely ham and was going to get rolls and cheese and sandwich stuff, but apparently that wasn’t fatty or salty enough. So the ham stayed in the freezer and I’m making potato skins. Talk about labor intensive! First, roasting the potatoes. Then splitting and scraping and roasting again, skin up, and AGAIN, skin down, then filling with cheese and bacon and back into the oven yet again. Then topping with sour cream and green onions . . . and I’m now reminded that I don’t have any green onions. Good thing I checked here, LOL!
No worries Heather..I think potato skins aree definitely good alternative…LOL!!!
I liked the commercials I saw on the links…the one about the 12 teams was pretty cool and inspiring. Have a blast!!!
Peace and love,
Paula R.
Those potato skins sound very yummy!
I made 7 POUNDS of potato skins! Took me 3 hours and the guys were burning themselves eating them right after I took each batch out of the oven.
That’s a good thing, means you made some really awesome food.
I am not big on football, but some of the commercials are pretty cool… I loved the bud lizards!!!
I tend to watch the puppy bowl on the animal planet channel instead…. the puppies and kittens are so cute to watch…
Great use of the icons, Colleen, LOL!
Hey Heather! Must admit I will be watching the Super Bowl this afternoon. I’m cheering for the Saints and really hope they win their very first Super Bowl ever! Heading over to my friend’s house for our Super Bowl party, so it should be a fun evening.
Did you see the shots of Bourbon Street? We called friends who were there and they held the phone so we could hear.
The only good thing about the Super Bowl for me is that I know baseball season is that much closer.
Me, won’t be watching, will be reading so won’t even see the commercials. . . but did my laundry and cleaning for the week, so I’m happy, and ready for my class tomorrow (so really can’t stay up anyway, though I don’t think this goes on really late, though since I don’t watch, I really wouldn’t know!)
Lois
And that sounds good to me! Except for the baseball. It seems slow these days.
I’m surfing now before the game starts! So far I haven’t turned on the TV as it all gets to be to much!! The game doesn’t start till later which gives me time to get my dishes done!! Since my team hasn’t played in way to many years I’ll be cheering for the Saints. That would be outstanding if they won their first Super Bowl ever!
Whichever team wins there will be dancin’ & carrying on!! Hope the game and the commercials & half time are good!!
Needless to say I’m a football fan, some of us females are!!
Heather you are not alone, lol! I will be watching with my hubby, but I really dont care who wins. I live in Indy but Im a Titans fan not a Colts fan. I do however love the commercials. The Budweiser Horses and frogs are always great. I will come back tomorrow and see what everyones favorite is. Have a great night!!
Will be watching the ads and really excited about The Who’s halftime show.
What did you think about The Who? I understand there were bets in Vegas on how many times Pete Townshend would “windmill.”
The Snickers ad with Betty White is an early favorite for me.
We’re not quite through the first quarter, but my favorite ad so far is the Dodge Charger commercial…Man’s Last Stand. My husband burst out laughing when the guy said, “I will watch your vampire television shows with you…” Too funny.
I did laugh at the “vampire television shows” line. And because my son owns a Dodge Charger.
I usually watch the Puppy Bowl as well but this year I’m rooting for the Saints ! Loved the careerbuilder.com ad about casual Fridays. I think all the Bud Light ads were unfunny and too numerous.
Bud 55? I’m thinking they added more water.
YAY SAINTS!!!! I was a little worried there after the first half, but they pulled through in the end. I loved the Green Police commerical, and the “whale of a bachelor party one.” Oh, I also liked the Simpsons Coca Cola commercial. Oh, and the mom’s first date one was awesome…”First, you don’t touch my mom and second, you don’t touch my Doritos.” or something like that….hahahahhahahaha!!!! I think that Doritos had some good ones, except the one with the dog collar; it just wasn’t my cuppa. I turned off the television after the first half, and read for a bit, and was surprised to see that the turnaround in the score. I just know that if I watched it all the way through, people would be celebrating for the Colts right now. Have a great night all…must catch some zzzzz so I can be clear headed for early am wakeup…not looking forward to it at all.
Peace and love,
Paula R.
congrts to the saints and new orleans
snickers was funny
casua l fridays for carerr builder was funny
happy monday all lol
congrats on teh book and great reveiews!!!!
Many thanks to Jane.
I had no idea The Who was performing at halftime. I think it was last year when The Boss performed; I heard about him for ages before he performed, yet I never heard this year that it was The Who performing. Hmmm….
A Snickers ad with Betty White? ANYTHING with Betty White has MY vote! Jeesh. I’m sure we won’t have the ad on our station, though. Even though it’s an American show, we get Canadian commercials. Bummer for sure.
As for the results of the Super Bowl, whatever you say. I won’t get to my tape of the game until 4-5 months from now, and even then I’ll only be watching the entertainment. Yeah, yeah, I know that I am WAY far behind. What can I say? I’m far behind on my sewing pile, my daily newspapers, and my TBR pile, so why not be behind on my shows too. “Real life” keeps interfering….
I hope everyone enjoyed the game. (I watched my tapes and scrapbooked.)
Oh the commercial with Betty White was my favorite! It was a bunch of football players and they scolded another guy that he played like he was Betty White! It was hilarious!
The E-Trade babies were really cute too! My past favorite commercials were the Budweiser frogs. They were awesome! I actually miss them! They played them a couple times over the years and varied the commercial.
The bad ones I can’t remember because they were so bad! My hubby and I had fun time watching the game tonight. We got a bunch of chicken, deli salads, fried some shrimp tempura, and had a feast! I absolutely loved the Who as the half-time entertainment. The light show was awesome! They played all my favorite songs from the band. The game tonight was pretty good! A lot of excitement over some plays and fumbles.
Wow! Your book sounds awesome Heather and what an amazing cover! Many congrats!
Thanks, Michele!
Oh! Oh!
Helen Brenna had clips of some of the Super Bowl commercials over at Riding With The Top Down. (Thanks so much, Helen!) I got to see the Betty White commercial. Loved it. Absolutely loved it. And Abe Vigoda too? Bonus! I KNEW he was still alive, LOL!

Thanks so much for providing this forum.
Hey everybody! You can view and rate all the ads on CBS’s site: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35224995/ns/business-business_of_super_bowl_xliv
There are a couple I missed, so I’m going to watch them.
Woops! That’s MSNBC’s site.
Good Morning Heather. Well I didnt get to see all the commercials, but a few of my favorites that I did see were; The doritos shock collar dog one, totally funny, The Bud Light house one was cute, the Bud light Island one was funny, and my hubbys favorite was the Dodge Charger one, which was pretty good too. Have a great day!
We had some local commercials. I suppose the network allowed the affiliates to sell time in their own market. Nobody mentioned the Google one. I thought it was cute. I was disappointed in the E*Trade babies. I thought the original one was better.
I remember when the Titans were the Oilers. Houston was sad when they left!
I really enjoyed the game last night, so happy the Saints won. I saw almost all the commercials and none of they really stood out for me. I was pretty disappointed in the commercials this year. I was happy to see the Budweiser horses though, almost thought there wasn’t going to be one.
It wouldn’t be a Super Bowl without the Clydesdales.
I actually watched some of it… my whole family said the Colts were going to win… I said no, I heard the Saints were… well we saw who won! Loved the Bud Horses!!!
My faves were the Doritos with the little boy, the Clydesdales and the bull, and of course Betty White. I love that little old lady–and how cool to see Abe Vigoda too.
I might want to be Betty White when I grow up. I’ll have to work on the feisty part.
Yea Saints! I’m so happy they won their first time ever playing in the Super Bowl. Betty White, the Snickers commercial was probably my favorite although I liked the Doritos dog collar commercial, I didn’t see the one about dating the little boys mom until I watched The View this morning. The Budweiser commercial with the Clysedales & friendship was a good one. Peyton Manning didn’t show me much by not congratulating Drew Brees. Drew with his baby boy was so sweet.
That baby is a doll. I thought Peyton Manning looked unhappy before the game started! Next big thing is the Olympics! Hope the US does well.
That was so sweet! He had tears in his eyes!
Whoops! I can’t spell Clysedales should be Clydesdales!
I haven’t seen them all but I haven’t seen any I wouldn’t fast forward through if I could!
I liked the Google one that told a love story
The Betty White one was funny, too. There seemed to be an anti-woman sentiment in a number of the ads, like the Dodge one and the book club one. I didn’t get Dockers’ “I wear no pants.” Shouldn’t Dockers WANT men to wear pants?
I’ve heard lots of hype about the Doritos dog collar ad and Betty White’s Ad. I always love the Budweiser Horses!!
Drew Brees and his son, Braelyn both were born on my birthday, January 15th !
Exciting second half for the Saints!
The Doritos ads were part of a competition. If you Google around, you can find the six finalists.
During that interception/TD, I kept saying, “You’re kidding. You’re kidding.”
Nicole S, you’re the winner! Actually, *I* won the first two times hubby drew numbers, LOL! But I’ve already read the book, so Nicole, email me your addy at Heather (at) HeatherMacAllister.com
Thank You! Really excited, I’ve been loving the encounters books.
Congrats Nicole!
Another Encounters, Heather? I didn’t know His Little Black Book was in the works! Sounds like a great project!
Yes, another Encounters
I was lured into Blaze little by little, LOL!
Woohoo Nicole! Many Congrats!
Congrats Nicole S. I hope you enjoy the book. Love the discussion about the ads too. Um, I didn’t recognize Abe Vigoda, so thanks for clearing that up. Man, I haven’t heard his name in a long time. It sounds like everyone had a blast…see Heather, wait a day or too and the commenters (sp?) will come…LOL!!! Have a great day all.
Peace and love,
Paula R.
