lbbAn Easter Egg is a hidden feature, inside joke, or message in places like software, movies, video games, DVDs, or books. For example, George Lucas references his first movie, THX-1138, in every film he makes. In STAR WARS, Princess Leia is held in cell block 1138.

For fun, I put one in my second Blaze, HIS LITTLE BLACK BOOK, out this month. It’s on page 28. Readers not in the know will miss it, but I’m letting Blaze Blog readers in on the secret.

I try not to repeat main character names even after forty plus books, so when Sophie the pug dog visited last year I thought, “There’s a good name,” and used it for Sophie Callahan, heroine of “Text and the Single Girl.” When Sophie the pug arrived, she deliberately checked out every room of the house. sophie_desk_smShe disturbed nothing, merely observing the status quo. Then, with a Grand Duchess air about her, she set about being the dog of the house. Her self-confidence became part of Sophie Callahan’s personality. Months later, in a funny coincidence, Sophie came to visit for a week at the exact time I was working on the manuscript revisions for her story. She quickly learned the household routine and would trot into my office and camp out in the knee hole of my desk while I worked. Here she is.

So when you read Sophie’s description, “She had pale blue-green eyes with an exotic tilt that kept her from looking too ‘girl next door-ish’ in spite of the ponytail, slightly pug nose and a few freckles”, well, here’s the inspiration.sophie_eyes I know, it’s a horrible picture, but she sure doesn’t look girl next door-ish, does she?

What Easter Eggs have you discovered or learned about? Have you hidden some of your own? Or is this all new to you? Post a comment for a chance to win a copy of HIS LITTLE BLACK BOOK.

Hi! Great story and pic re Sophie. Thanks for sharing!

Director Jerry Zucker (Rat Race, Ghost, Airplane, Naked Gun, etc.) always casts his mother in his films.

I can’t think of any “Easter Eggs” of my own; sorry!

I love pugs and would love even better for one to visit and then go home with its owner.

I like how Clive Cussler always inserts himself somewhere in his books – as a very minor, minor character – it’s sort of a running joke.

In my manuscript I have a secondary character with my maiden name.

My childhood sweetheart, and lifelong friend, passed away at the age of 37. We were friends for over thirty years, starting in the first grade. He was very funny, outgoing, and talented. I was a shy bookworm with long hair. His nicknames for us were “Salvatore and Cherilyn”, the real first names of “Sonny and Cher”. We always had a secret reference to “S & C” in our conversations, letters and gifts. Some were obvious and some were harder to find, but there was always something! It might have been a bit from a song, a skit, a movie, even a costume. I miss my friend every day, and I cry every time I hear “I Got You Babe”. When the real Sonny died so tragically, and Cher poured her heart out at his eulogy, I sobbed along with her! I still have a silver ID bracelet that he gave me with my real name engraved on the top and “Cherilyn” engraved on the back. Priceless!

Hi Heather, love the pic of Sophie under you desk. I can’t think of any Easter eggs in books right now, but I do remember Alfred Hitchcock always showed up in his films…also, Nora in her Lifetime movies and Stephanie Meyer in Twilight at the diner. I am sure that if I think real hard I can come up with ones in books, but my brain is a little sluggish this morning.

You don’t have to enter me for your book because I already have all the Blazes for this month.

    Peace and love,
    Paula R.

    • Sometimes I see that an author has named a character or building or organization after someone mentioned in the acknowledgments and dedications. And yay on you having the Blazes already! Excellent!

  6. Colleen says:

My sister looks to see if dvds have Easter Eggs… she has shown me a few… you would not know they were there unless you hunt for them… What a cute dog!!! (*)

  7. What a fun idea, Heather! As for the pug, well, adorable comes in all kinds of packages (or should I say shells?). Cheers!

  8. Jody F. (Joder) says:

I can’t think of any specific ones right now, but I do love finding them. I can never find them on my own though, I always go to those websites that have them listed.

  9. Great post!

I am terrible at finding Easter eggs as well, but I am lousy at most puzzles in general! (C)

    • Jody and Karyn, I don’t usually find them on websites or in video games, but I watch NCIS and once someone asked Jethro what Ducky had looked like when he was young and Jethro (Mark Harmon) answered, “Illya Kuryakin” which is funny because David McCallum (Ducky) played Illya Kuryakin on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Also, in Ducky’s house, you can see a picture of Illya and Napoleon Solo. It was great!

Aww, fun pictures there! :) I can only think of DVD easter eggs. . . think one of the newer Star Wars disks has Yoda dancing or something. I kind of forgot since I really don’t bother with DVD extras of any kind, I just want the movie! LOL :)

Hi Heather! I remember the episode of NCIS you mentioned above. It was a good one. I know I have seen some easter eggs in movies and shows. The main ones I can think of right now are the ones in the Dan Brown movies.

As for “His Little Black Book” I loved it! It was such a great story and I really love the ending, cracked me up! Although I do have to say Kevin and Mia’s story was my favorite! Hope you have a great night!! (*)

  12. Linda Henderson says:

The Alfred Hitchcock was the one that came to my mind first. Wasn’t he in every one of his films ? I do find these things fascinating.

    • He may be the first one I knew about. I just looked it up and it said that people would watch for him so he started making his appearance early so it wouldn’t distract from the film.

  13. Cathy W says:

The only Easter Eggs I know of in books are the Clive Cussler ones the Liz already mentioned! LOL – and like her, I rather lost interest when he started writing with other authors and branched out the series, retiring Pitt to a desk job. The new heroes just aren’t the same! (Nor the stories, for that matter.)

In DVDs, the only one I know of is on the DVDs of the old TV series Dinosaurs, they actually have eggs show up on the menu page if you just scroll around (rather than go directly to the thing you want to select).

  14. Star Wars is supposed to have some and the Windows operating systems does, too, but even though I know where they’re supposed to be, I can’t find them!

  15. Lauren says:

Like others, the only “Easter egg” i can think of is Alfred Hitchcock, making a cameo appearance in every single one of his films. I’ve seen quite a few of his films (with my favorite being, Rear Window) and i always keep an eye out for his appearance. Other than that, i can’t think of any others. His Little Black Book sounds like a lot of fun!

  17. Nicole S says:

Well I didn’t think of any Easter Eggs until I read the comments. The only one I can think of is Peter Jackson made appearances in the Lord of the Rings movies. I’ll have to look out for the description when I read His Little Black Book.

  18. Colleen says:

    Congrats Laney4! (*)

  19. Laney4 says:

    Hi there!

I just emailed you the pertinent info. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I also checked out that web site. Pretty cool! I haven’t figured out how authors cut/paste the square into their blogs, though, as when I copy it, it comes out straight across the page without graphics. Oh well. It DOES work, and that’s what matters!

    Have a great day.

Oh! Thanks also to Colleen. Your congrats are indeed appreciated (as is the book).
