Not just any guilty pleasures…carnal, evil guilty pleasures

My life has been hectic lately. Not only are we closing in on spring, which is a busy time for west coast gardeners, but my day job is in Finance. If you work, or ever did work, in Finance, I don’t need to say any more. But for the rest of you, I’ll mention that little word–taxes–coupled with upcoming quarter-end reporting at a time when we’re still not done with year-end reporting, and suffice to say, March is a busy time at the day job.
I’ve also been working to complete my November Blaze which I just turned in last weekend (yay!!), my husband’s and son’s birthdays are in two weeks, we just had a shed built for our back yard which means we now have to fill it by clearing out the garage. Oh, and Babe Ruth is starting up.
So where does that leave me?
I’ll say one thing’s for sure, the diet is BLOWN. Of course, it only takes me one excuse to blow the diet, and I’ve got–what–four listed here? Oh, it is SO gone! Which means me looking like Angelina Jolie will be put off for another month. It also means that the selfish side of me reaches out for those guilty pleasures I need in order to handle all the stress without going insane.
Like many people who visit this blog, my guilty pleasure is books. I feel I’m living in the black if I’ve got more “read” books on my shelves than “to be read”, and often I can only accomplish that by including my high school yearbooks and photo albums in the count. Otherwise, I run dangerously close to 50/50. But does that stop me from adding more to my Amazon.com wish list? Of course not! It wouldn’t be a guilty pleasure if there was no guilt involved, now would it?
My second guilty pleasure is food (see paragraph on diet above) and when it comes to that, I could go on for days. But I was thinking about the topic of this post and asking myself what is my MOST guilty pleasure when it comes to food? You know, that horrible thing you don’t even want to admit to eating, but it’s SOOOO good? I’ll never forget an episode of Oprah where an audience member admitted to eating turkey skin sandwiches. Now, even I, a woman who will pick at the crispy golden skin until my husband comes in the kitchen and swats me away, had to admit a certain revoltion to actually putting chunks of it on bread and slathering it in mayonnaise. But I could understand it. And that’s the kind of stuff I’m talking about here.
As a kid, we used to take Wonder Bread, spread on some I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, then sprinkle it with sugar, roll it in a tube and eat it like a Pirouette cookie. I have more money now, and can just buy the things when I want them.
So now I’d have to admit that my most delectible guilty pleasure would have to be chicken fried steak with milk gravy. It’s my favorite food I hate to love. I’m not sure if there’s any nutritional value that hasn’t been fried out, and if there were, the laden fat from the gravy would probably prevent absorbtion. But ask me if I care? I love it with all it’s faults.
It was in the news w shile back that microwave popcorn is bad for your lungs, which lends an interesting twist to the phrase, “inhaling your food”. I was happy to say that we don’t microwave popcorn. We still make it the old fashioned way in a pot with oil, because I prefer to die of heart disease over lung cancer.
Then again, I’ll never forget the line by Dennis Leary who, when told about his cigarettes, “Those things will take 5 years off your life!” replied, “Yeah, but not the good ones.”
Amen, brother.
So tell me, what’s your guilty pleasure? Go ahead, you can confess. And if it’s too embarrassing, just post under “Anonymous” and we’ll never tie it back to you!

Icing straight out of the can. I don’t even like canned icing on an actual cake (I’m an icing snob and I like my buttercream made with actual butter), but on a spoon its heaven.
The other one is donuts. Chocolate iced and cream filled. Love the darned things so much that I won’t allow myself to eat them day- (or more-) old. They’re horrible for you, and if I’m going to eat deep fried sugar and fluff, its got to be the good stuff.
Oh, tell me about it! I’m guilty of tearing the bottoms off cupcakes so that my ratio of cake to frosting is a more appropriate 50/50. LOL!
Hi Lori,
I love the topic! My most guilty pleasure. I really don’t feel to guilty about any of it!!
There is nothing so delicious as a good burger & french fries, oh yum! I don’t to often indulge but when I do I enjoy every bite. I also use real butter quite liberally on anything that might need butter, nothing can replace it. Like you I don’t make microwave popcorn, it tastes phony! I have an old hot air popper that makes good popcorn, then it is finished off with real melted butter & salt! Yum, I indulged just the other night.
Okay, that is probably enough about me!!
Glad you have a book coming out in November, although that seems so far away!
P.S.!! How could I not list bacon (as in bacon & tomato sandwiches) and ice cream. My very favorite is Trader Joe’s Coffee Blast, I have a really hard time not buying it in the summer. My doctor says it is one of the worst things ever invented!! Oh no! :-S Where is everyone no one has left a message since I was here before??!! :-O
Ooh, Donna, BLTs are my favorite. There was a deli in Marin down in Northgate called Italian Delight. They made these amazing BLTs with avocado. Best part was that they finished off their bacon in the microwave, so when you got it on your sandwich, it was warm and there was a ton of it. Sadly, they’ve been gone for a long time now. I’ve yet to find a deli as good.
And remember Swenson’s? I used to get their Swiss Orange Chip ice cream. That’s another place I used to love that’s gone now. ;-(
As for books, I do have one coming out in June, so you won’t have to wait too long!
Swenson’s was a favorite. I loved going there. Black & White sundaes were a favorite. That deli in Marin sounds wonderful.
One time in Santa Barbara someone took us to this Italian deli that you had to know was there. We had the best sandwiches, ever! It had been there for years and they did a fantastic business. It was one of those experiences you were glad to have!
I really love food. One can tell by looking at me!!!
I try not to feel guilty about anything – however I have noticed that I do feel guilty eating some fast food – McDonalds and any of the local pizza places.
I do wish that I would feel guilty eating KFC since I eat way too much working there.
LOL Lyn, I think I need to adopt your attitude. I prefer simply not feeling guilty!
Lori, Lori, Lori…shame on you…LOL!!! Just kidding…I have a lot of guilty pleasures, but I will only mention a couple…my number one is buying books and getting lost in the wonderful worlds hidden beneath the pages. And, my second, is traveling. Sometimes I get the urge to run, and I will book a ticket and just go. I know it is not financially responsibile, but the idea of getting away just appeals to me.
Good luck with all the tax stuff…I still need to get mine done. Enjoy your guilty pleasures lady. Do what you need to, to make it through.
Peace and love,
Paula R.
Wow, Paula, how neat it would be to be able to book a ticket and go! I think it’s cool that you do that (even if it’s not financially responsible, heh).
