Usually by this time of year, I’m experiencing a major case of spring fever.
You know the symptoms, right? A decided lack of focus. Staring out the window at the at the beckoning blue skies. Fingers itching to play in dirt and plant flowers and vegetables. The need to shop for the perfect new book-bag to haul reading material to the beach, the park, the swimming pool. Increased energy brought on by the almost-manic reminder that swimsuit season is right around the corner.
I love Spring Fever. Its the start of spring reading. Of colorfully blooming gardens. Of hanging by the swimming pool with a pile of books.
And its still raining here. The last time we had this much rain in California in April was the year I got married. That year, it rained every weekend EXCEPT my wedding (yes, yes, I do take that as a blessing (H) ) I haven’t planted a single posie. My veggies are only growing in my imagination and the beach? Brrrrr. Not even on the agenda until the sun hangs out a little longer.
I want my Spring, darn it.
I’m getting waterlogged here. Not that I don’t appreciate the rain. After a few years of drought, I’ll be thrilled to dig in moist soil instead of hacking through sun-hardened dirt. It’ll be wonderful to go to the lake and not worry about how little water there is. And hey, the longer it takes for spring to get here, the longer I have to prepare for swimsuit season, right?
So I’m trying not to get to antsy for Spring (hmm, no ants yet is a good thing too, right?), but its not the same staring out the window at the rain and hail and wishing I could be out there swinging on the hammock and reading.
But my stack of books to be read is piling up quite nicely, waiting for the rain to stop.
How about you? Has Spring sprung in your neck of the woods? And do you have any fun Spring reading traditions?
And hey -don’t forget to keep an eye on the blog for the Scavenger Hunt hints…

Hey Tawny! Yes, spring has definitely sprung here in the south. The pollen is everywhere and just yesterday it knocked me down with a yucky throat and congestion. That’s what I don’t like about spring.
But on the up side, flowers are blooming. My irises look beautiful! The grass is really green and looks great when freshing mowed. And all the little league baseball games are in full swing. Now the kids are counting down to school is out for the summer. Not much longer.
Ohhh, selective amnesia. I forgot about allergies while wishing spring would hurry up! Ick, allergies suck and we get them bad here. I’m totally with you, Buffie, they bite.
But I’m totally jealous of your iris. When we moved, I did dig up a bunch of my bulbs, but they didn’t get in the ground early enough to give me a pretty show this year.
btw, I’m with the kids in counting down days. I can’t wait LOL
It’s been spring on and off here, which is typical for CNY –in the last month we’ve had 80 degree days and 30 degree days, and I’m hoping yesterday was the last of the “white stuff” we’ll see for now — supposed to be a significant warm up again this weekend. But the flowers have been out, and it’s definitely spring.
As for reading, I do tend to read more “light” books (as opposed to dark paranormals, etc) in the spring.
Sam
Sam, I think that reading habit is shared by many, including me. I always think of spring and summer reading as the fun books. My rom coms come out, I read a lot of novellas or steamy fun stories. Winter reading does seem deeper.
I’m jealous of your flowers
My daffodils have come and gone, but nothing else has had time to bloom. The rain and hail keep knocking the buds off :-P
We jumped right into summer here… it has been going between the 80′s and the 90′s… blah…I want a cool down and rain would be welcomed!
I’m with you, Colleen. I love the gentle slide into summer. A quick slam from cold to heat is so jarring!
Hi Tawny,
I’m not sure where you are in California but here in Sonoma county where I live it is raining or maybe more showers! I don’t mind much after 3 dry years.
It was beautiful over the weekend so the rain is not so bad when alternating with beautiful days. It is still all green and lush which is so pretty, lots of flowers blooming and almost all the trees are in full leaf. Soon enough it will turn golden & be dry throughout the summer & into fall so I’m enjoying the spring rain. Bathing suit, not for me!! I don’t want the rest of the world to get that good a look at my aging body!!
Enjoy the day despite the rain. (Y)
I’m close, Donna
I’m just outside of San Francisco and we’ve been soaked this week! But like you say, its been such a long dry spell that the water is welcome.
The weather shows its going to be gorgeous this weekend, I’m really looking forward to all that lush green prettiness *g*
Me and my swimsuit tend to hang out in the backyard, btw
Nice and private enjoyment while the kids play in the pool and don’t dare pass judgment on the lady who holds the snow cones LOL
It’s been a strange spring here. Two weeks ago, we had to turn the AC on because it was 90 degrees. Today, I’m so darn cold I’m ready to turn the heat on. But on the upside, at least we had a spring this year. Many years we go from cold to 80+ degrees. This year we’ve had a lot of nice days in the upper 60s – 70s. And as someone else said, pollen like I’ve never seen.
Still, I’m wondering if the reason I can’t seem to make any progress on my proposal is because I need to work in my garden. I think I’ll take this weekend and do just that!
Hope the rain stops soon for you, Tawny!
Whoa! You’ve already had to employ AC, Christie? I’m still in sweatshirts, although I’ve hit the flip-flops a few times in hopes that it’s warming up. As soon as I do, though, it gets cold. I did see that we might get into the 80s next week, though.
Hey, I’m a firm believer in gardening being a boon to writing
A little time with your finger sin the dirt, a little time with your fingers on the keyboard- they go together like peanut butter and chocolate LOL. I hope you get that proposal done
We had a nice cool morning, but I think it’s the last of them. I’m back in shorts and flip flops (H)
Ahhh, I’m so jealous, Heather
Everything is blooming earlier here thanks to the surprising 80 degree weather earlier this month, but now it’s back to typical 50 degree weather. Of course I worked a lot at the bakery when it was warm out so my typical yard work couldn’t get done. It’s too cool now to do much yet, but this weekend it’s warming up to the 70s. Yay! To me it’s not spring until I go to a ball game, which I have done so it’s spring lol I have planted my flowers seeds in a starter green house kit. I’m waiting til no threat of frost comes so I can stick it outside.
Nicole, I’m always in awe of people who can grow things from seeds. Mine never thrive, so I’ve given up and go with seedlings and blooming plants
It must be so fun to have a starter green house going!
Ugh on the teeter-totter weather. I hope it smooths out soon and you get baseball warm! My brother and SIL were at a Giants game the other night so at least that part of Spring seems to be moving on, despite the icky weather.
Spring is finally here! I’ve never lived this close to the ocean, so I don’t know what is normal with the water effect. Most people around here seem to be of the opinion that winter hung on a little long this year. But just in the last week, green shoots are everywhere, daffodils and crocus are blooming, and the temps are in the 40s & 50s. The forecast keeps saying rain (has for a couple weeks), but we’ve mostly had sunny skies with a few brief showers. Wonder how long that will last?
I don’t really have any spring reading traditions, other than that once it warms up enough (and before it gets too warm), I like to sit outside and read.
(Of course, here where it doesn’t get much above 60F in the summer, the too hot issue shouldn’t rear it’s ugly head!)
Cathy, spring by the ocean must be incredible. Winter, summer and autumn by the ocean must be incredible, too
I’ll bet its gorgeous, especially with all the bulbs popping up and sharing their beauty.
And hey, year-round outdoor reading will be awesome, huh? There is something just so mellow and relaxing about reading outdoors, isn’t there? I hope you get lots and lots of reading time
Thank you!!
Yes, each season is amazing. And they are all so different, and the changes happen so fast! It is truly fascinating!!
