The little things have been piling up. You know what I’m talking about. Those things around the house and in life that cause a small bit of annoyance, yet never seem to get taken care of by the magical fairies. We’ll I’ve fired my magical fairies. Quite honestly, they never showed up for work, so don’t feel bad for them.
Now, let me preface the following by telling you this has been a wonderful, but extremely busy year so far. Last fall I added graduate school to my already slammed schedule, which made my 10 hour days seven days a week, turn into 14-hour days, and even 19-hours the last few weeks. Honestly, if I didn’t love school so much, I would never go back. I do, so I will, but I know not to load myself up quite so much in the future.
Speaking of the future, I need to get back on topic. While I was so busy, those annoying things began to pile up. The laundry, my desk, the conference table in my office, the 5000 emails (these aren’t junk mails unfortunately) on one of my accounts, the stacks of TBR books in bags all over the office, even though I read almost exclusively on my Kindle now and the tax records that are spread out all over my office. You get the picture. I’d ask other people in my house to help out with some of “the little things” but those people are men, and evidently only capable of a certain amount of responsibility.
I’ll give you an example. About a year ago our built-in microwave (We have the worst luck with microwaves) just stopped working one day. It was exactly five days past the warranty. My husband and I were both traveling that week, so I suggested he hook up the small one in a box in the garage that one of my son’s won a while back. It was barely big enough to boil a cup of water. Of course when I got back home, I found one online and showed it to my husband. He being one who has no trust of buying anything online, said he would go and check it out at the store, and let me know. Five months later I was in L.A. doing my day job stuff, and I get a call telling me the small microwave blew up. Sigh. So I call the Hub and I threaten him. “Get a new microwave before I get home, or else.” I’ll leave the “or else” to your imagination. Of course, even though I was gone for two weeks, he waited until the day I was coming home to go look. The one he wanted had to be ordered so there was no microwave when I came home. He discovered I was quite serious about the “or else.”
The little things just don’t bother my husband and my kids. As long as they have a access to food, a bed and cable, they’re pretty much happy. So if I’m bothered by the “little things” I have to take care of them myself.
I turned in a new Blaze, She Who Dares, Wins, on Wednesday. That also happened to be the last day of school (No that wasn’t a stressful week at all.)
As soon as I hit send for the book, I began tackling things on my list. The first was to clean the kitchen to my standards. My husband and kids think cleaning the counters means wiping them down, but they never put anything away. They just sort of shove it to wall. The second thing on my list was to clean up those emails. The third was to read some manuscripts of people who won a critique from me in a contest. Each day since the end of school and turning in the book, I’ve tackled at least one of the things on my list.
I feel better about life right now. Every time I complete one of those things on the list, I have such a feeling of accomplishment. My day begins a little brighter, when I come downstairs and bits of my life have been cleaned up.
This weekend I’m tackling two of those things that aren’t so little, my conference table, and the piles of DVD’s I get from network and cable shows. I know when I’m done I’ll feel so much better. In fact, it feels so good, I want to do more and more.
So how about you, do you have a list of little things? Share them here and then we can all cheer each other on.

I’m tackling virtual clutter – 2 computers, three external hard drives and two 4GB flash drives. Redundant back-ups should only be taken so far, and right now I don’t know where my original music video files are, so it’s time to go through a few years worth of data. (Y)
Congrats on turning in your book, making it through the semester, and your TTD List accomplishments!
– Heidi
Heidi, I need to clean up my desk top in a big way. Thanks for reminding me of that. And you go girl!
I’m always tackling Virtual clutter. Those Fairies on on a beach somewhere sipping pina coladas! I’m also tackling closets and basement clutter. We unfortunately have an unfinished basement. Cement floors and an ancient…wait for this..you’ll laugh, coal furnace. For the past month I’ve been going through stuff down there so that it looks less like a war zone then it does right now.
We don’t have basements where I live, but I have a feeling mine would be filled with boxes and boxes of stuff! Good for you.
Are you sure we don’t share the same family?
My DH will run out and buy what *he* needs within minutes of needing it. I’m still waiting for a screen door for my front and back doors so I can get a little cross ventilation in the house that he complains is too hot.
It’s been 10 years…
I can’t begin to explain how my family cleans for me, but let me submit this! Last night, I got a call while at work from my DD2 (who is 21, btw) to tell me it took her a good five minutes to figure out which button to push to start the dishwasher :-O Tell you anything about how they clean?
And could someone please explain to me why my family thinks they should eat every day?? It’s not all it’s cracked up to be, but they seem to think so…
I’ll stop now. (H)
LOL. I hear you on the screen door. Mine is painting the guest bathroom, but I’ve only been waiting 2 years. He replaced the toilet and painted the wall behind before he did. But he didn’t paint the rest. Sigh. He doesn’t like the way I paint so….
Good Morning Candy! I am totally with you on the fireing of the magical faries, they are nothing but trouble, lol! The little things never seem to end. Today I have to go to the grocery store, iron my hubby’s work clothes, do laundry, give the dog a bath and clean the downstairs. Will it all get done, most likely not, lol! And to top it off 2 of my kids are sick and the youngest is like a little leach when hes sick. In fact he is glued to my lap right now as I type this. Also the next couple of weeks are going to be crazy. I have to start getting ready for my oldest son’s 10th birthday party. Its going to be crazy around here. And me being the crazy person I am also wants to put in a garden in the front yard and clean out the garage some, lol! Well I figure if I take it one step at a time it will all get done in time.
Well I hope you find the motivation and have a great day! (*)
Alina, whew. That’s a lot. You IRON? I thought that was what dry cleaners were for.
Hope the little one feels better.
Hmmm, my guys (house full of males too, well, other than me) have a horrible time about helping with the laundry and general clutter. My husband finds it amazing that I can have the dishes and laundry under control each morning before walking out the door.
Of course, when I go on strike, it’s amazing how things start getting done around the house.
All in all, we do pretty well. Some projects sit for months; others get done in a whirlwind of activity from all of us. I’m not sure how we ended up with that balance. (Perhaps it was me starting out by commenting to the now 6 year old that I am neither his maid nor his servant. DH picked up the hint. LOL)
LOL. Love the not a maid or a servant. Awesome!
Alas, the mood and energy to actually get some of that stuff done doesn’t strike me nearly often enough! If you’re feeling extra energetic, you’re always welcome to come and tackle some of my junk!
JV, I NEVER have the energy. I’m fighting mono, so tired is my life. BUT I find doing little bits at a time, really does add up. And it makes me feel less hemmed in.
Sorry, but I’ll be busy with my own junk quite some time.
Candy, Take a moment and breathe. You need it
I hate clutter and right now, I find myself in the same situation as you, weighed down my other important things in life. At least dust bunnies never killed anyone At least I hope not. Fingers crossed.
Mageela, I will breathe after tackling some of these things.
I just need to get it done. I know how great I’ll feel when I do. And it helps me write faster when I’m not surrounded by clutter.
I’m tackling my office today. It’s tiring, but every time I fill a box that leaves the house, it makes me happy.
Candace, I have an opening for a “little things do-er” position. I think you ought to apply. You sound like you are expertly qualified for the position.
I should be working on clutter – both physical and electronic, as well as heading to the storage unit to pull out the games/puzzle boxes I’ve been wanting out for a year, not to mention all my gardening items so that I can learn to patio garden this year! *sigh* So much to do. Of course, we looked at a house for sale earlier today (we went for a walk, okay so we intentionally went past it and the lady saw us and invited us in for a tour on the spot!). The location is great, the yard, house and studio fit the bill totally, the price is reasonable….but we can’t afford a pot to tinkle in right now, so it really isn’t an option. LOL – so that is my longwinded way of saying that instead of doing the ‘little things’ today, I’m daydreaming and stargazing. (I suppose I really ought to get on it and figure out a way to get my horse back in front of my cart!)
Hope you get a lot done today, everyone!
LOL. I’ve discovered I can still star gaze, and tidy at the same time. I have enough jobs, but thanks for the offer.
Today I’m tackling my office. I’m so tired. But little by little I can see a difference. Things have been piling up since before Christmas. Sigh. I actually had to put wrapping paper away. (Shakes head.) But I can see wood on my desk and the conference table. And I’ve thrown away a couple hundred DVD’s from old TV shows. It’s coming together.
My big thing is cleaning, I have to be the mood to do major cleaning, but now it’s doubly hard because at work I have to clean so when I get home I don’t want to. I have the next four days off so I may just myself in a cleaning mood.
Nicole, I seem to have those moments where I have the urge to clean. But I’m teaching myself to do it, even when I don’t feel like it. It makes me feel better.
I do a general clean and neaten (uncover the counters and the dining room table, put away the worst of the obvious clutter, sweep up the 5 cats worth of furballs) once a week, so it doesn’t get too overwhelming. I can’t work well amid clutter, either.
My problem is the “out of sight” areas, like the upstairs rooms and closets that tend to get things shoved in them until they won’t close anymore
This summer I’m going to tackle all of them, by golly. But not tonight…I have to write!
I have that out of sight problem too.
