ferocious guard dogs

I’m dog sitting for a couple of weeks, something I like to do. People keep telling me I need a dog. No, thank you. I’ve had a dog–a miniature dachshund. Sure, I’m a dog person, but after years of caring for beasties, both human and canine, I’m ready for a break. Dogs are work. Just look at the two with me now. Although HINT: they had a tempting start, I’m sitting outside watching them as I write this and by the time I got to this sentence, I’d been out of the chair three times to check on them. The first time, they were eating the bushes–seriously, they uproot them and chew. takiThe second time, they were both way too interested in the corner of the grill, sniffing intently and pawing. I had to investigate in case they’d found a toad. See, toads have a toxin in their skin and dogs who eat them go on a bad trip, as they used to say. Apparently there is foaming at the mouth, disorientation, and failure to recognize humans. I do not want to verify this. The third occasion was because, even though they’d had a yummy breakfast of dried dog food, they were eating, uhm, disgusting material. Good times.

zeldaAnd then there is their stuff. They arrived with two crates, eleven chew toys, two baby gates that had to be installed, bowls, collars, leashes, harnesses, two kinds of treats, about ninety-five pounds of dog food, Benadryl, glucosamine tablets, a giant dog bed, four blankets, and three single-spaced pages of instructions.

I know what some of you are thinking: get a cat. But that’s because you’re cat people. Dog people are thinking: at least there’s no litter box.

So which are you? Dog person or cat person?

Good Morning Heather! I am most definetly a dog person. I like cats just fine, but I cant stand how they climb on everything. I grew up with big dogs, but now we have a little dog. She’s an American Eskimo Spitz. So pretty much shes a 15-20 pound hair ball, lol! I do have to agree with you on the amount of stuff they have. She is just as spoiled as my 3 kids, lol. Have a great day! (*)

    Hi Heather,

I am a dog person but my husband is a cat person. So, after we raised two Sheltie puppies for 14 years, we got two kittens from a shelter. Cats are easier, but you are right – the liter box (yuck)

I am a dog person owned by cats. My code name in cat language means “can opener”. My Native American name means “woman who sits with cats”. In English, I am “Crazy Cat Lady” : )

After many years of adopting and caring for stray dogs, my mother and I thought we would take a break. At that time we had two elderly dogs, and we decided not to get any more pets for a while after the dogs were gone. Then the cats came, and life was never the same. (@)

I am an animal person. I have 8 cats and a dog…I’ve adopted my neighbors Sharpeis. I just love all furry creatures…though the vet has given me crazy cat lady status. However if I had the money there would probably be a pug or a yorkie to get beaten up by the kittehs :)

    • See the white dog? Her mother is a Sharpei. Other than a little loose skin at the neck, there’s nothing of the Sharpei in her that I can see. We think her father is Spuds MacKenzie.

  8. I’m both. :) we have 2 dogs and 2 cats. :) I would be a bird, goat, and horse person too, if we had the room, LOL.

Of course, then we’d never make it out on vacation.

We have a lab, and a pit/pointer mix (we used to think she was a pit/dalmation mix, but found out otherwise) and I am a huge fan of pits and do whatever I can to educate and rehabilitate people’s views of them — wonderful dogs, and I will have one forever. But would like a small dog at some point, some kind of terrier. Love our lab, but I am a big terrier fan, I guess. They are so smart. :)

Our cats are SPCA rescue, and they are easier in a million ways, especially when it comes to travel. Dogs are pricey, especially big ones, to kennel, etc but I wouldn’t ever be without them.

    • After two weeks of living with them, I see how easily the bull terriers can be exploited. Taki, the black one, would respond as soon as she figured out what I wanted. She wanted to please. If she had something in her mouth, all I had to do was say, “Drop it” and she did, instantly. The breed responds to strong, involved dog owners, so they’re not for everybody. But I decided that if I’m ever living alone, I want one.
