Yep, file another blog entry under ‘All Things Sticky.’ Of course, baklava – more specifically Tony’s Famous Baklava – is usually what I’m referring to when I bring up the topic of sticky stuffs. But in this case I’m talking about Facebook and the naughty goings on during weekly hump day celebrations on our wall.

What am I saying? To some extent, every day is hump day on Tori Carrington’s FB wall. There always seems to be some sort of wicked shenanigans going on, up to and including considerable ‘poking’…and I take great pleasure in making the experience as suggestive as I dare.

lollipopBut every Wednesday is a free-for-all that includes numbered Hump Day Hotties (photos of male cover models in various states of undress), dirty jokes and raunchy YouTube music videos. Oh, and the aforementioned lollipop? It’s a fun application where you invite people to suck on your lollipop until it’s, um, sucked dry.

Gasp! Too suggestive for you? That was Tony’s concern. And it’s the reason why I scaled back a lot of my bad girl activities…save for Wednesday, that is. Although I enjoy pointing out that friends do not ‘un-friend’ us in droves: rather they eagerly come out to play. In fact, it’s become a version of ‘Girls Gone Wild,’ where we, the girls, reclaim and enthusiastically redefine a term originally established by the guys all in the name of fun.

While at the Romantic Times Convention in Columbus earlier last month I was asked if I thought Facebook and other social media were worth a writer’s time in terms of self-promotion. My response was a shrug and a smile. All too often

it’s easy for writers to get caught up in the professional angle of the business. Analyze how they should act, consider what is appropriate to say, focus too keenly on the brand they’re trying to create, and then respond accordingly. Over the course of our lives – much less our career – one important lesson we’ve learned is that if you’re not having fun…well, what’s the point? Readers don’t ‘like’ or ‘follow’ or ‘friend’ you because they want a dry litany of your available titles and coming appearances. They can get that information from a variety of sources. No, they want to know you; enjoy spending time with you. And what better way to do that than by being yourself? Inviting them to pull up a virtual chair and laugh and applaud and ooh and ahh along with you?

Having said that, I’m thinking I need to designate at least one more day a ‘free-for-all,’ girls day out. Today, maybe. What shall we call it? Funny Friday? Funky? Freaky? Oh, wait! Why not Free-for-All Friday?

What do you think? Comment with your response to my thoughts, as well as with your answer, and automatically qualify to win a copy of one of our backlist titles!

Oh, and while you’re at it, come on over to Facebook and give my lollipop a lick, will you? Or at the very least, poke me! http://www.facebook.com/toricarrington

Free-for-All Friday! I like it. I think you have to be yourself whether that’s serious or fun or shy or outgoing or a mix of everything. If you spend anytime online, as an author or a reader, it would be too hard not to be yourself, to always be “professional” or to try to be who you think folks think you should be. As you said, if you’re not enjoying yourself, what’s the point.

    Good Morning Lori and Tony!

I am your friend on facebook and I absolutly love you guys! You make us, the fans, feel like we are part of your lives and it makes reading your books that much more special. And you are always making us laugh and have fun! I have to admit I do really love hump day cause of all the fun that goes on over there. Chatting with authors on here and on facebook is so much fun. I love it. And even my husband knows who my favorites are by name, lol! I will have to come over and poke you later!
    Have a wonderful day!!! (K) (*)

  3. katie says:

I have gotten to ‘know’ authors through their websites/blogs. I think it helps build a connection that makes readers want to buy their books.

    • Isn’t the Internet fantastic, Katie? Some say it serves to isolate us more from one another, but I disagree. I’ve met so many wonderful people online! And it allows me to interact with some of my own favorite authors. Love it!

  4. Tammy Yenalavitch says:

    Hi Lori and Tony,

Why don’t you call it Freaky Free for all Friday. Yes, I am your friend on Facebook, but I never send you naughty things, I send you nice things! And I will keep poking you! I like having authors as my friends on Facebook epecially the ones I met on eharlequin like you!!

    • LOL! Cute, Tammy. You’re not only our friend on FB, you’re one of the first ones we made there, you know, back when I was obsessed with Hatchlings and like apps. And, yes, you send me wonderful things! iHeart you back, sweets… :-D

      • Tammy Yenalavitch says:

Now I am liking Fun Free For All Fantasy Friday or just Fun Fantasy Friday. Thanks again for posting the Def Leppard video and I really am a good girl LOL

  5. Virginia C says:

Can’t go wrong with a Tootsie Pop–the most reliable sucker there is! Hard on the outside, with a nice chewy center that lasts a while. Fun flavors, too! ;-)

    How about “Freewheelin’ Friday”?

  6. Nicole S says:

I’m a friend of yours on FB. I look forward to your posts and pictures especially the one you shared this morning ;-) I enjoy getting to know the authors be it on FB, harlequin, or blogs. You get to know the person/people behind the books.

I’ll definitely give you a poke later today.

    • Omigawd, isn’t the Cowboy with Tat smokin’ hot, Nicole? I’m drooling just thinking about the pic…

It’s funny, but in the past couple of weeks Tony actually requested I stop the lollipop deal because he thought it was going too far, but when we were discussing possible alternate blog topics last night (I hated the ‘Beyond the Writing Cave’ post I had already written), he was all over the ‘Suck My Lollipop…Please’ bit. Guess that means I can pull the app out again. Yay!

      Poke ya later, babe! :-P

  7. Monica VanBeekum says:

I think every day should be hump day! I agree that us readers and writers (especially us unpublished ones) want to get to know our favorite authors. I love the comaraderie and the support from other writers. And your posts always give me atleast one well needed laugh a day on FB!

  9. Tracy says:

We can always have Freaky Friday! (H) Granted, Hump Day is a blast, and Tony, quit worrying! A lot of what happens is more suggestive than actually provocative (though, I do admit to getting carried away when I have time to be on the computer and not analyzing financial records). OH, wait…we did have the whips this last Hump Day, and I still think Bat Masterson’s cane would also be fun to have in the dungeon. And, Tuesday was G.I. Jane with her handcuffs, which worked quite well with the theme for the week.

As a reader, it’s been fun for me to connect with authors. I have no desire to be an author, but it’s been interesting to see how much of the author ends up in their books.

Love you guys! You make my week fun! (F) (K)

  10. diane says:

    hi,

i am a facebook friend also. and i have to agree: i LOVE being your friend. i enjoy all the shenanigans we all get up to and i love discussing music and DWTS and SYTYCD (just to name a couple topics) with you. i also really enjoy seeing pics of your family and friends. lucky girl, you are just surrounded by the hottest men!

i also love when you tell us that a new book is being released so i can either hop online or grab it from the bookstore. i don’t wanna miss anything!

    • I am lucky, aren’t I, Diane? Oh, and very modest. lol

Omigawd, yes! How could I forget about TV nights? It’s so much fun posting during commercials. Can’t wait for the first official episode of SYTYCD next week!

  11. Laney4 says:

    Hi!

I don’t “do” Facebook, but I “do do” the blogs, LOL!

Since it’s Friday, you are leaning toward adjectives starting with an “F”, and I like all the suggestions so far. I like Fantastic and Fabulous too, and then there’s Foxy. They could be Figments of Our Imagination or Footloose and Fancy-Free or just plain Fanciful. Fascinating? Fellows of Fate? Festive Fridays? Friday Flavors? Flesh and Blood Fridays? Friday’s Flusters? Focusing on Fridays? Pray tell it won’t be Frivolous Fridays, LOL!

    • Tracy says:

Oh my gosh, Laney, you have got to do Facebook. We have so much fun on there, and the guy candy we get to ogle makes it a lot of fun.

BTW, I have a daughter named Lainie. Her given name is Elaine, but she gave it back.

      • Laney4 says:

My given name is Elaine also. When I began blogging, I wanted the anonymity of Laney. The 4 was added because … well … just because, I guess. Four is my favorite number! (It all started with “Number Four, Bobby Orr!” many moons ago!)

A girlfriend nicknamed me Laney years ago. She and one other friend call me that, and she chose the spelling. (It all started with me saying, “There isn’t a nickname for Elaine!”, again many moons ago!)

BTW, my first name is Monica. I decided in Grade 8 that Elaine was too “old” — it reminded me of Ethel and Gertrude — so I went by Monica. “Friends” started calling me Mona, so I quickly reverted to Elaine, as to me, Mona was more like Ethel and Gertrude!

    • Ooooh, I’m liking Fanciful Friday, Laney! May I ask why you don’t do FB? Bet you’d have tons of fun… :-P

      • Laney4 says:

I don’t like private information about me “out there”. My daughter is on FB, so if she thinks I’d like to see some pictures, she copies them to my email address so I can print them (like relatives who refuse to keep in touch).

I have a typing business in my home, but I don’t advertise, except for word of mouth. Again, I am paranoid about strangers knowing too much information about me. If my business was outside the home, I’d probably advertise more. However, I don’t want to work outside the home, and so far it’s working for me!

Back to FB: I spend SO MUCH TIME blogging that I just KNOW I’ll spend WAY more time on FB, and I don’t get enough things done around here as I should!

  12. Yeen Mampusti says:

    Hi Lori & Tony,

I’m a fairly recent addition to your FB friends list and I really enjoy reading your posts. I absolutely love the Hump Day Hotties!!! I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the naughty posts or pokes or apps. On the contrary, they add excitement to an otherwise boring day. ;-)

How about “Fantasy Friday” or “FantaOrgasmic Friday”? :-D

    • Ooooh, I’m liking Fantasy Friday, Yeen!

It’s funny, but we have accounts at MySpace and Twitter, and I’ve been making an attempt to interact a little more at both. Yesterday I caught myself look for the ‘Like’ button while browsing tweets. LOL

  13. Paula R. says:

Hey Lori, love the title. I thought about adding that app, but I would have way too much fun with that one…especially if you are on at the same time as me. I loved your response regarding FB. I am so glad you take that approach because I LOVE getting to know you as yourself. I can find all the other stuff out from websites, booksellers, etc, but hanging out with you on FB has given me much better insight into you as a person. THANKS for that, Lori mou. I mean, I even get to learn another language.

I thought we had today as HUNK DAY on your page? When did I miss that one. I love the free for all. They are very entertaining, and the best thing about it is I can choose to join in or just enjoy the shenanigans going on. It is always a blast coming to your FB page, and the pokes…we won’t even start a convo on that. I swear you are a machine gun…ooooo better yet, a Gatlin when it comes to poking people. I always get a little warm and fuzzy knowing that you and others think about me. You are the reason I even poke anyone.

I am loving Working Stiff. I was planning on having it done before today, but work got in the way. I am going to finish it later on tonight though. I hope you are having a wonderful day. Tell Tony Yiasou for me okay.

    Me agape kai irini,
    Paula R.

    • Yiasou, Paulitsa mou! Merely seeing your name pop up – on FB or anywhere – inspires a smile. Thank you, thank you, a thousand times thank you for your friendship, sweets! Filakia! (K)

      • Paula R. says:

Filakia poli, Lori mou. Efkharisto. I can say the same of you too. I love that particular personalization, which you wrote in one of the books I won here on BAB. It really does lift my spirits. I hope I get to see you face to face soon because I totally need to soak up your presence and get you both to autograph Working Stiff. It has been a different experience reading this one. You guys wwere right, I do love me some Sophie and the trend is definitely going to last. I am loving “Frisky Friday.” See you on FB. Me really likey the Hot cowboy with tattey…yummy!

        Peace and love,
        Paula R.

  14. Donna McClure says:

    Hi Tony & Lori,

I’ve been a fan of your books for years first with Temptation & on to Blaze. It is always fun reading your books because I know Tony is there with a male point of view! (Y) I think I friended you on Facebook but I don’t spend much time there so I haven’t joined in your Wednesday Hump Day. Laney4 has made some very good suggestions for Friday, Fanciful or Fascinating both seem like very good choices. :-)

    Have a great weekend. (H)

    • Hi, Donna! I like both suggestions as well. You must make a point of coming out for at least one Hump Day – Tori Carrington style on FB. You won’t regret it!

  15. Gale Laure says:

Okay, you two – Tori – you got me here from FB! I would love a backlisted book to add to my nightstand stack.

    See you on FB!
    GL

  16. runner10 says:

I agree 100%. The blogs and websites make me feel like I actually know the authors. I like to hear the good and bad. We all have bad days.
    I like free-for-all Fridays!!

    • Unfortunately, bad days are a fact of life, aren’t they? Of course, muddling through them together is what makes the good days that much sweeter! Hope you’re having an especially good Friday!

  17. Colleen says:

Not a Facebook person, but I do loves blogs… always great to read what people want to share… I get to enjoy reading some crazy things, LOL stuff, and some important info… and do not forget about books… so many out there that I learn about by visiting blogs…
    Nice Pics! ;-)

    • LOL! Glad you enjoyed the pics, Colleen. Truly, you should give FB a try. There are a lot of authors there. Visiting walls there is like a more interactive, daily blog… (H)

  18. Madelina says:

I agree with what you’ve said. I would so much rather have fun and get up to insane and suggestive shenanigans ;-) Lord knows I’ve added my two cents worth kept something going as it got even crazier. I love how much fun your page is! It’s so much fun and you can let loose. (H) I can find impersonal dry stuff about authors anywhere on the web if I want to. The fun on Facebook gives me a chance to know the authors on a more personal level. Makes them feel more like friends and truth be told, the pennies I save up for my book budget go to my friend’s books first. :-) Oh and I say once again Lori and Tony, thanks for being my friends and being so great to me and treating me like family when I met you two at my first RT. You two are fabulous! (D)

  19. Amy says:

I’m thinkin’ “Frisky Friday” would be good. ;-)

  20. I have yet to ‘poke’ you but I have been watching others do it. lol You do like you pokes, don’t ya? That guy is, drooling-over-my-keyboard-to-get-a-better-look-at-him…hot! Call it night out with the bad girls gone wild. Yeah, it’s long…so sue me. lol

  21. Jane says:

I like “Free For Fall Friday.” I want to run out and get some baklava.

    • Oh, suddenly I have a craving for baklava, Jane. Thanks a lot! I’m making spanakopita and tiropitas tonight (to put in the fridge and bake later) for a class reunion tomorrow….

      • Paula R. says:

You know, I actually had some baklava yesterday. One of the Latin teachers here make it as a treat for his classes. It was very yummy. He said he will make some more for the faculty meeting on Monday. I can’t wait.

        Peace and love,
        Paula R.

Hi Lori/Tony!! I LOVE facebooking with you and other authors! Its nice to know that we sometimes have the same likes and or dislikes! and that you all are “people” just like us!
I’m really liking the “frisky friday” title!! It just makes my heart glad to Poke you a time or ten each day!! Big hugs!! ;-)

  25. I, too, am one of the ones who keeps watching you get poked … I vote for “Frisky Friday.” “Free-for-all Friday” is good, too. The gals at the Ruby Slippered Sisterhood (the 2009 GH finalists) have one of those!

  26. Raonaid Luckwell says:

Hey! Hehe you can call me your Insatiable poker (hehe you left a message on my wall yesterday about being insatiable)! hehe. I remember reading your posts on facebook about the pokes.. and I was feeling goofy and decided to join in. Now I can see all the fun. It’s been great!

  27. nancyg says:

LOL @ Lori – I saw your Facebook post & came over here. ‘Nuff said – promo works.

    and I’m a proud Wednesday “poke-r” ;) Speaking of which, I think I owe you one…brb!

How about “Friday Fun-day”? That’s what I call it when I have an evening happy hour with friends planned. or “Fantastic Friday” which is when I take the girls out for frozen yogurt or a Frapp after school. Then there’s “Terrific Tuesdays”, “Thirsty Thursdays”, etc. etc., lol.

    • Ohhhh, yeah, Nancy! I’m all for naming every day of the week. Alas, I have to limit myself or I won’t get any writing done. Having said that, Friday Fun-day sounds great!

Too funny on the promo working! I swear, I do so little actual ‘promoting’ on FB that I’m genuinely surprised when someone I’ve been talking to – and/or poking – for eons reveals they’re a huge fan. LOL

  28. I’m a big voyeur … always watching you get “poked.” I vote “Frisky Friday.” “Free for all Friday” is good too, but the gals over at the Ruby Slippered Sisterhood (09 GH winners) already have one of those.

  29. April says:

Lol, excellent post!!! I LOVE all your yummy models that you post on facebook by the way!! I think Friday has the most word play titles. How about “Feelin’ Frisky Friday” or “Feelin Free Friday” (okay, I was going to say “Feel Me Up Friday” but didn’t want to get to…well…you know…. lol!!) ;-)

  30. Lisa says:

Love you guys. As I said on facebook hump day is everyday for me. I agree 100% with the others the blogs and websites make me feel like I actually know you. I’ll continue to post mine everyday so you can enjoy them as well.
    I like free-for-all Fridays!!
    Ms. Trouble

  31. Lisa Bullis says:

Free for all Fridays!! I love it. I love that you and my other fav authors are on FB. I love to say when I am telling people of your books that I am a FB friend. I have through some of you found other authors that I might not have found. I think it is very important to use social media to further your reach!

Love my pokes keep them coming! :) (L) (H)

  32. Amanda Chesshir says:

I like the Free for all Fridays! That is a good name. I have to say what you post on facebook is very nice to look at and not suggestive at all! :-D

Tony and Lori – I love you guys. You are one of my favorite romance authors and I am always looking for something new from you. I love posting messages on your facebook and reading the responses. Thank you for interacting with us FBers. I think your friday tag should be “Bring Your Freak On” Fridays. I think that would be fun and adds that sassiness to make it more fun! Have a wonderful poke day! Shel ;-)

I’m smitten with so many of the ideas that I’ve decided not to go with any single one; rather I’ll decide on a different one every Friday morning, depending on my mood.
