Swimming pools, grandmothers, ice cream and Saturdays. Honestly, those are the only things getting me through the next two months. I have a friend, an elementary school teacher, who’s been posting about her wonderfully relaxing summer plans on Facebook. I wish! Somehow, summer has become more hectic for me than any other season. By the end of it, I’m praying for school to start again.
I honestly wish I could take two months off of work just to spend it with my girls. There are so many things I’d really like to do with them this summer. Top of the list is the new Star Wars exhibit at the Space and Rocket Center. I know, I’m a geek.
I wouldn’t turn my nose up at some pool time or just lounging in the sun. I’d take them to the science museum, the zoo and the botanical garden. What do I get instead? Pandamonium. They’ve been out of school for precisely one week and I’m already tired of playing referee. I can’t even fit these things in on the weekends. We have three birthdays (Baby Girl’s, Sweet Pea’s & mine) and one anniversary (12 years…I think. Dangit, I’m terrible.) all within four weeks of each other. I have the RWA conference and a couple workshops I’m doing for our local libraries.
You know, I used to love summer. Now, between the chaos and the unbearable heat, I just try to survive until fall. Is summer your favorite or least favorite season? Are you scheduled to within an inch of your life? Do you have anything special planned?
There is one thing I’m looking forward to, visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Good Morning Kira! I like you just cant wait till fall! Mine just started summer break and Im already tired of the fighting and having to play referee! We dont really have anything scheduled except my oldest has summer session for 6 weeks. Aside from that I hope to make a few trips to the zoo and the childrens museum. I do wish we had a vacation planned but thats not going to happen right now.
I have to say Im very jealous that your going to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter! I want to go there so bad!!!! LOL! Have fun and enjoy your summer! (*)
Thanks! You too
I’ll have to report back on our WWoHP adventure.
If I can make it through to the middle of July, I will be golden. We have so much going on until then. No rest for us. My middle dude wants to go to Harry Potter. I wouldn’t mind it, either.
My oldest daughter just started reading the books this year and is dying to go to WWoHP. Unfortunately, it isn’t in the plans for the family this year. We’re visiting Great Grandma and Mickey Mouse instead.
Kira- I love this time of the year. Yes, I am a teacher and I am off too. I love to spend the time with my boys (5 and 8). Plus I watch my brother’s boys(8 and 10) all summer too. I am thankful for summer rec. programs and adventures in our community. We spend all morning at the local park enjoying the activities and then in the afternoon after lunch we venture to the local Y and they swim the afternoon away, while I don’t fight for a chair and sit in the air conditioning and watch them swim and I get some quiet time with my books. We also go bowling and have playdates with friends.
All good times I would never trade for. I am blessed for this time with all the kids and know they will have memories of all the tiume they spent.
Plus our family have planned a waterpark adventure, the boys first major league game and camping. I love this time.
Happy summer!
Cim, my mom was a teacher so I completely agree. She started teaching when I was older so I don’t specifically remember when she had summers off but my girls do. They spend every summer with grandma and their cousins while I’m at work. Enjoy this time!
My kids are grown so I only have myself to keep occupied, and somehow the summer is nearly full already. Next week I will be going to help my mother recuperate from surgery and that will take a week or ten days. But on the up side, she lives at the beach. (H) Then I’ll get home and start planning for the RWA conference. I’m teaching an online class right now and need to do some revisions to the book I’m pitching in Orlando. So even when your kids grow up, you have stuff that gets in the way. As Roseanne Roseannadanna would say, “It’s always something.”
Enjoye the beach!
Yeah, you’re right. It’s always something. My commitments expand to fill the vacant space in my calendar.
I really do not care for summer… it is already hitting the hundreds here…YUCK! No big plans so far… watch my nephew, read, play my Wii, go into the pool, hang out in the AC, read!!!
I’m right there with you, Colleen. I’m not a fan of heat which is funny considering I’m usually cold. But maybe that’s the problem. The AC is up so high I freeze inside and then immediately roast when I go outside. Say cool!
Summer is not my favorite season. I don’t tolerate the heat well. (N) I’m retired so summer is just another part of the year. My daughters are grown with their own families. Although I don’t like traveling in the summer I am off tomorrow to head north so I can see my younger grandson graduate from 8th grade. I’m looking forward to see the family. Before I get to my daughters I will spend a couple of days with a good friend and then after my stay at my daughters I will head to southern Oregon to visit more family & friends. After all that I will be happy to get back home despite the fact that it will probably be hot here! Fall is my favorite time of year. Here in my corner of the world it is still nice in the fall but the nights and mornings bring cooler weather, usually!
I love the fall color.
Despite pandemonium, enjoy the summer. (H)
Enjoy your trip! I know you’ll love every minute with your family. I’m very lucky that mine’s right here with me, but growing up I looked forward to that once a year visit with my grandma.
I love summers, but these constant daily thunderstorms we keep having are definitely destroying chances for enjoying outdoors. I have never experiences so many such storms before.
Yep, we’ve had afternoon thuderstorms every day for almost a week. They’ve ruined the girls plans several times.
