First off, I’m very excited to have My Fake Fiancee on shelves this month in company with some of my fave authors. I thought the covers this month were scrumptious. Though why my heroine is wearing her bathing suit in the bathtub has me in a puzzle ;-)  Oh, well. In the scene she’s um, not!

So, sometimes as an author, you end up writing a book completely out of season, which is what’s happened to me. I’m writing a Hockey Encounters book right how. With the whole world in a heat wave I am writing about ice. And cold. And winter coats. Honestly, I sweat just thinking about it. This would probably be a fun exercise at a writing workshop, a kind of test of the imagination. Okay, it’s 90 degrees outside, write about a snow storm. Or, we’re in a snowstorm, quick, write about sitting on the beach on a hot summer’s day. I’ve actually found a hockey rink that’s operating, so that’s good. And sometimes I stick my head in the freezer for inspiration :-D  But mostly I’ve been sailing. I recently got invited to crew on a 35 foot sailboat. I am having so much fun. It’s always a fun bunch of people and we are racing. The first night I went out the crew was so slim I actually had to do a pretty important job. I was tailing, which means I had to pull and winch one rope that operated the jib and another that operated the spinaker. I was doing great. Until in the heat of the race somebody yelled at me to ease off the jib. No problem. I eased. And eased, and let more rope out until finally somebody yelled at me to STOP. Seemed I was letting down the wrong sail. Which is not usually a good way to win a race!! However, in spite of my newbie disaster, they keep asking me back. And yesterday we won our race. What a thrill that was. Then I came home sunburned and wrote a bout snow, and cold and hockey…

Meanwhile, another friend of mine invited me to play pool. Now, I have never ever played pool before. Not even once. So, picture me in a bar, getting a lesson on how to play pool (which naturally involved a nerve strengthening beverage) and then this couple comes up and challenges us to a game. Talk about pressure! I mostly tried not to do anything stupid like knock the white ball in a hole, and let my partner do the heavy lifting. It was great fun. Fortunately no one was serious. And then I came home and thought THAT’S how I can get my princessy figure skating heroine to go out with the jock hockey player. He’ll challenge her to a game of pool and she won’t be able to resist. That’s what I love about writing. The greatest scenes come in the most unlikely places. Now If I could just figure out a way to get a sailing scene in a hockey book…

Hope you’re all staying cool, except when you’re reading some red hot Blaze.

Happy Reading

Hi Nancy! I totally give you props for the sailing. I always wanted to learn to sail, but I get sea sick really easy, lol! So not the best pass time for me. I just got this months books so I havent read My Fake Fiancee yet, but I cant wait to! I love your books. The hockey book sounds like its going to be fun too! Cant wait till it comes out.

    Have a great day! (*)

Hey, Alina, how nice of you. Thanks. All this month’s books sound good to me, too. Can’t wait to stop writing and start reading!

Yes, sailing is really fun. I’ll never be one who can figure out wind direction or plot a course, but I can yank rope and duck when the boom flies overhead with the best of them. And when it’s sunny and the breeze is fresh, mmmm.

    Nancy

  3. You were in a sailing race?!? I’m impressed. And what a great picture! The glamorous life of an author . . .

  4. Nancy Warren says:

LOL Heather. yeah, you know how glamorous. I probably showered and got out of my jammies ten minutes before running out the door. Or am I the only one who writes in jammies???

Sailing, it sounds wonderful. I have friends that love it but I’ve been sailing. One friend says it is a lot of work! I want to just ride along & watch!! :-D My daughter is dating a man that plays hockey, she is not thrilled with it but really likes him. He seems to be a really nice guy. I’m thrilled she has found someone that treats her so well. I really thought she would never find someone and she wasn’t looking that hard! :-) Her son likes him, very important!

I’ve been enjoying the “Encounters” books and will look forward to reading yours. (Y)

Oh, oh! That is suppose to say I’ve never been sailing. Guess I should have read that again before posting!! :-S

    Mmmmm….hockey. Mmmmm….hockey players. :-D

I’ve never sailed, but it certainly looks interesting!! I think writing about snow and hockey and ice in the heat of summer sounds great! But then, I dislike the heat immensely, so if it is that hot, I’m usually dreaming of cold and snow anyway.

What a fun tale about your inspiration to get your characters together. Thanks for sharing!

Hey, Donna! Glad your daughter has found a nice guy. Yeah, that hockey — first they lose their teeth then they lose all their free time :-) But some of those guys are hot! I think sailing is as much work as you want to make it. The trick to cruising is to go on a bigger boat with lots of keeners so you can relax and enjoy the day.

Hi Cathy, you raise a good point, of course. I just keep forgetting to do things like dress the characters in coats and gloves!! Just not top of mind for me. I’ll have them going out in winter in shorts and a tank LOL.

Hi Nancy! Yes to writing in jammies… they make up my daily wardrobe, so I have treated myself to an extensive selection. Lately I’ve been partial to the pink and green striped pants, but this winter I wore a scarf-wearing reindeer print all the time. That pair is fleece, and living in the mountains, that’s important!

Yum to hockey players. My husband– the former sports editor and reporter– was convinced hockey players were the most down to earth of all the athletes he met. We root for the Penguins at my house, which makes us somewhat unpopular when we go to Montreal for games against the Habs. :-) Can’t wait to read the Encounters!
