What are your favorite things to do in the summer?
Lately, my favorite things are reading, traveling, and (I hate to admit it) catching the new summer series on cable TV. I think at some time in my (not too distant past) sitting by a pool or on the sand at a beach would have been right up there. And swimming would have hit the top of my favorite-things-to-do list. (But a visit to a pool or the beach always involved a book. Or two or three.) Lately, my old favorites like riding my bike, roller skating and running aren’t even making the top ten anymore.
Just in case any of you are favoring more sedentary activities (as I seem to be doing), I’m going to recommend a great book, a new TV show, and a travel destination.
The book I highly recommend is one that I picked up in the Borders at the Jet Blue JFK terminal because I had a four hour layover. It was Elizabeth George’s latest Thomas Lynley mystery, and I loved it. (I have to admit that I love to read mysteries probably even more than I love to read romances. Give me romantic suspense and I’m in heaven!) I used to be an avid fan of Elizabeth George’s, but I haven’t read her in a while. This story and the English setting fascinated me, and since she’s never a quick read, it distracted me from things I had to get done. For me, that’s always a sign of a really good book. (“Silence of the Lambs” once cost me a whole day in Hawaii! Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” made me miss most of a Labor Day Weekend at a good friend’s house.)
Now for the TV series. So far my favorite new series of the summer is “Memphis Beat” on TNT. “Covert Affairs” on USA is premiering tonight, but it will take a lot to edge out “Memphis Beat” as one of my new favorite summer shows. Of course my “old” favorite summer TV series include “White Collar,” “Burn Notice,” “The Closer,” and “In Plain Sight.” But the thing I really like about “Memphis Beat” (aside from the fact that it’s a cop show) are the characters and the setting. I’ve watched three episodes and I want to visit Memphis.
The travel destination I’m going to recommend is Queechie, VT. I’d never heard of it. My sister dragged me there on our way back from Nargansett, RI to Syracuse, NY. We did visit a beach first, and the route makes a nice triangle on the map. We stayed in Woodstock, but the place that drew my sister there was the glass blowing factory that Simon Pearce established in Queechie. Simon relocated his family there from Ireland and bought an old mill to design and manufacture his glass. His wife is a potter. In addition to a waterfall and glass and pottery demonstrations, there’s a fabulous store and a gourmet restaurant. Shopping, great food and wine–that seems to define what I like in a travel destination–even more than a beach. Queechie is a bit out of the way, but if you’re visiting New England, I highly recommend it.
One more thing–as long as I’m listing favorite things and recommending… It’s the fiftieth anniversary of the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” If you haven’t read it, I recommend it. If you have read it, I recommend reading it again. I had the great pleasure of teaching that book for fourteen years to ninth graders, and I never grew tired of it. I intend to read it again myself before the summer ends.
Have you got a list of favorite things you like to do in the summer? Do you have a book or a travel spot or TV show that you’re crazy about? Or do you have a memory of reading “To Kill a Mockingbird?” or seeing the movie?
Please share.

I love White Collar and Burn Notice. I also like Royal Pains. I’m watching True Blood, but I’m kind of horrified by it. I don’t know if I like it so much as I’m fascinated by it.
Hi Heather,
I love Royal Pains too. I think the thing I like most about the USA and TNT series are the characters and the writing.
I also am fascinated by “True Blood.” My son got me hooked on it when the first season came out on DVD.
You were right about the birds taking a long time to leave. The last one fell out of the next yesterday…with a horrible thump. I watched him run across the street and across a few lawns with one of his parents on his/her tail. I’m not sure if he/she ever really took flight.

Cara-
Can’t say I have a favorite book this summer. I have just been trying to catch up on all the books I needed to read from my to read pile. It is much smaller now then when school got out.
The t.v series that I have gotten hooked on is the reruns of The Good Wife. WOW!! It is a series that I missed but wanted to see. I love it. I DVR it on Tuesday night and then watch it Wednesday afternoon when I get my t.v time. It is my simple pleasure this summer
My memory of reading To Kill A Mockingbird is reading it in high school and loving it.I was so into it, I was always raising my hand and participating in class discussions on it. I could not wait to see the movies. It did not disapoint. Yes, it was not the book, but it was close enough for me. It made the things I read come to life. This book and movie are a classic in my mind and can’t wait to share these classics with my children some day.
Happy reading and traviling to all
Hi Cim.
I love “The Good Wife” also! I started watching it in October and November since I was watching “NCIS Los Angeles” and originally out of inertia, I stayed on the couch for the show that followed. But I also DVR it–since sometimes I fall asleep.
It’s a great show.
I also love the movie of “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Not the same as the book-but very good in its own right. Did you know that Robert Duvall played Boo Radley in it?
Thanks fo blogging.

Hi Cara! I have to say my summer plans are boring and include not losing my mind, lol! I love to swim and miss the beach like crazy. Now the only swimming that we do happens in a kid pool. LOL! I am however enjoying reading. I have read a ton and still have a bunch in my pile to read. I havent really watched any TV all summer. I try to watch Ace of Cakes and Cake Boss when I remember, but most nights are spent talking with my Hubby or reading. Although my best friend keeps telling me that I need to watch True Blood. I might try to find time to watch it. I love me some Hot Vampires!
I do remember reading To Kill A Mockingbird in high school and loving it so much that I went out and bought a copy of it. I also loved seeing the movie. I love old classic books and movies. My favorite movie of all time is My Fair Lady with Audrey Hepburn. My mom and I can sit for hours and watch old movies with Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby.
Hope you have a great day! Oh and I want to thank you again for The PI. I cant wait to read it! (*)
Hi Alina,
I think talking to your hubby and reading beats TV shows.
I was thinking about “To Kill a Mockingbird” because I saw someone interviewed on Tv who said that people have vivid memories of when they read the book–just as they remember where they were and what they were doing during important historical events–like the day JFK was shot or the day the Twin Towers fell. My strongest memory is of the movie. It was a neighborhood Theater and I can remember what the marquis looked like outside.
I don’t watch Ace of Cakes–but I have to admit a weakness for Top Chef.
I hope you enjoy The P.I.

I was so happy that White Collar has returned. I also caught the premiere of Cover Affairs and I thought it was okay and will probably watch the next episodes. Have on SyFy is pretty good. It’s great that there are new TV shows instead of just reruns.
Hi Jane,
I have to say that “White Collar” is one of my favorites. I hope the writing stays as good as the first season.
I’ve never watched “Have” on syfy. But I’m going to look for it. My cable TV offers a channel where you can watch reruns for a certain amount of time–and Syfy is one of the channels they offer. Thanks for the tip.
I DVRd “Covert Affairs” while I watched “Memphis Beat.”
I agree about new shows over reruns. (Especially when they rerun most of them at some point during the season.)
Best,
Cara
Sorry, I meant “Haven.” The show is based on a Stephen King novella.
Just got back in town, but had to tell you I LOVE Memphis Beat! My sis lives in Memphis and we just returned from spending a week there. I’ve recognized street names and settings from that show already and LOVE the characters, too.
I also love the CLOSER and Burn Notice.
I’m also a HUGE Elizabeth George/ Lynley fan and have the new book in a queue at the library.
I’ve never been to Queechie–never been to New England at all, but will add it to my list of places to visit
And I just watched TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD again a few weeks ago. I need to get the book and read it again
I haven’t read it since Jr High.
