Whatever Happened to Endless Summers?

Posted by Cara Summers in Cara Summers, Uncategorized
Are mine the only summers that seem way too short? The back to school ads are on TV–a sure sign that summer’s endless days are dwindling away to a precious few. And–even worse–the “new” summer TV series are already warning that there are only two or three shows left until the season finale! (By the way, I want to thank whoever it was who suggested that I watch “Haven” on the SyFy Channel. I’m really enjoying it. I’m also loving “The Glades” on A and E. But they’re all ending soon!)
Maybe the length of the season is somehow attached to the fact that I’m an adult? When I was a child, the time from the last day of school in June until the Tuesday after Labor Day seemed to stretch forever. And there was nothing to do but choose what T-shirt I wanted to wear with my shorts, what games I wanted to play with the kids down the street and which book I wanted to read that week.
Or maybe it’s just me who feels that my summers don’t have enough time for just…relaxing anymore. The lady who lives behind me has time to sit out on her deck and do nothing but get a tan. If I go out on my deck, I feel that I would have to clean my grill first. And perhaps sweep the floor. And then there would be the windows… Those tasks would definitely eat into my tanning time. And if I don’t go out there, those chores can remain on my to-do list. Until next summer.
Or maybe–and this is just occurring to me–maybe my summers seem shorter because I’m actually doing more things. This summer I’m traveling to Florida three times, I’ve been to Rhode Island once, Vermont once, and Michigan once. Could it be that my childhood summers only seem longer because I was pretty much confined to one place?
Maybe my ptoblem isn’t that summers are shorter but that I have to find more time to fit in “summer things” while I’m at home. Any suggestions?
The one thing that I still seem to fit into my summers is time to read. (Although I listen to a lot more books than I actually read any more). The ones I’ve especially enjoyed reading this summer are: Amanda Quick’s “The Burning Lamp,” Tami Hoag’s “Deeper Than the Dead,” J.D. Robb’s “Fantasy In Death,” Elizabeth Lowell’s “Death Echo.” These are all writers I’ve been reading since they started out in short category romance. I would recommend all of them. Currently, I’m reading Linda Howard’s and Linda Jones’ “Blood Born.” Ordinarily, I’m not a vampire fan, but I’m hooked on this one. It’s currently in my CD player in my car and I’m already thinking of errands I can run today so that I can listen to it. And Nora Roberts’ “The Search” is next. One of the nurses at my doctor’s office said she didn’t sleep for two nights because she couldn’t put it down.
In the waning weeks of summer, do you have any suggestions about books that I could add to my “to listen to” list? What’s the best book you’ve red this summer?
Or do you have any suggestions on how I might stretch out summertime in my own home? (I’m at the point where I’m actually thinking I have to clean out my closet and line up my fall teaching clothes. Ugh! Help me!)
I’m not offering any free books for suggestions this time, but if I’ve promised you a book earlier and somehow missed your email, please send me another reminder.
I hope you all enjoy the last days of summer!

Morning Cara! I think it could be because you have been none stop that summer seems so short. For me it seems like its taking forever! I cant wait for tuesday when my two oldest start school. Part of the reason I think it’s seems so long for us is because my oldest is Autistic and has a hard time having so much down time. I try to have more structure like school does, but its not the same. So its a good thing school starts soon. Lets just say I have been counting down days for almost a month, lol!
As for ways to stretch summer, I dont really know, lol! I spent the afternoon yesterday laying out in the sun while my kids played in a kiddie pool. It was nice until they decided to dump buckets of water on me. That was not so much fun.But then I climbed in to the pool and we all splashed each other till everyone was soaked. It was fun. Aside from that just reading and relaxing. Hope you find some time to just enjoy your summer. Well whats left of it.
Oh and Thanks again for the book you sent me. I can’t wait to read it! Have a great day! (*)
Alina,
Splashing in a kiddie pool sounds like a lot of fun!
I hope the last few days pass quickly for you. And I think that you’re right about my summer being non-stop. I definitely thing that’s why it went by so fast.
I hope you enjoy the book.
Best,
Cara
Alina:
Lots of hugs to you. I totally understand about your son….my Oldest has autism, also. I totally get having to ‘create’ structure during the summer for him.

Morning!! Our summer has seemed to also fly by this year. I think it’s because my oldest is starting school this year and he’s nervous about it, which makes me nervous about it, which makes it seem to come that much quicker. lol
Every time we’ve tried the beach it’s been super hazy, yucky weather. So we’ve done a lot more things around our house this summer. We’ve really enjoyed talking walks around our neighborhood, although we call ‘em scavenger hunts. lol And I’ve been making lots of salads and just “fresh” summery meals.
Also, this summer I’ve been drawn to more books about demons and fay and whatnot. I really enjoyed Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning, and will be getting the rest in that series.
Hope you enjoy what’s left of your summer!!
Kim Lyn,
Thanks so much for the book recommendation. I’m going to try it. I didn’t think I liked vampire books before, but it seems, I do.
Your oldest is starting school! How exciting. I have a grandson who is starting kindergarten this year, and I’m going to be in Florida on his first day!
Your summer sounds very relaxing. Sometimes, home is the best place to be.
Best,
Cara
My summer is flying by. I was ‘gone’ at some point for the first five weeks. I missed my house, my bed, etc. Reading didn’t get done, cleaning didn’t get done, etc. I think that was my problem this year.
My boys don’t go back until after Labor Day. We have just started to ‘get back in the groove’ for summer and it will be back to school time. I don’t know what I’ll do in September (except for doctor’s appointments…LOL) because usually, I start volunteering right away, but all three of my boys will have new teachers and they don’t usually start volunteers until mid October. Sigh. I’ll have to have coffee dates with friends and actually do stuff around my house. LOL.
Summer has gone by… my nephew started school this past week. I have read quite a bit… enjoyed Diane Gaston, Rita Herron, Lisa Jackson, Melina Morel, Christie Craig, Vicki Lewis Thompson, many more including your wonderful Blazes! Looking forward to tackling more of my TBR pile… waiting for the cooler weather to arrive!
