One of the best things about being a writer is that I get to live vicariously through my characters and do all the things that I’d never dare do in real life. For example, I work full-time for the Department of Defense and one of my agency’s top priorities is to support our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan by soliciting volunteers to perform six month deployments. While I’m not brave enough to leave my home and family for six or more months, I’ve watched many of my coworkers volunteer to support our troops in the Middle East. They operate in an administrative capacity, but they endure the same austere living conditions and day-to-day hardships that the military do.
This got me thinking…what would it be like for an attractive, single woman with no military background to go over to Afghanistan, to be surrounded by hardened soldiers and to live according to their standards? And what if she finds herself falling for the one soldier who believes that women have no place in a combat environment and who, despite his attraction to her, questions her abilities and does everything in his power to send her packing?
This was the genesis of Hot-Blooded, the first book in the new It Takes a Hero miniseries, out on bookstore shelves this month.
I loved writing this story and researching what it’s like to live on a remote military outpost, where mortar attacks and insurgency aren’t the only dangers, and where intimate relationships aren’t just frowned upon; they’re almost impossible to achieve. I especially enjoyed writing about Chase McCormick, the badass special ops solider who prides himself on the fact that no woman has ever made him lose control, either in bed or on the battlefield. But after meeting Elena de la Vega, the toughest battle he fights is his desire for her. He quickly finds himself becoming the kind of soldier he once condemned; the kind who would give his life to protect a woman. And while Elena initially questions whether or not she has the fortitude to cope with sandstorms, camel spiders, and the irresistible attraction she feels for Chase, she soon realizes that love is the most powerful weapon of all.
Is there anything you would love to do, but are afraid to? Share it here, and I’ll pick two random winners to receive a copy of Hot-Blooded!

I think it would be fun to sky dive into all the gorgeous fall colors! I have a male friend who goes all the time and raves about the rush. But I’m too chicken!!
I;m with you, Laurie…why jump out of a perfectly good plane?
Hi, Karen! I am a Southerner who loves NASCAR–200 MPH–around that oval track–trying to stay ahead of the pack!!! Intense
Virginia, they host the NASCAR races near where I live once each year (I think), but I’ve never been to see them! I might have to check this out!!
Bungee jumping or hang gliding. They look so fun, but I am so afraid of heights and a big chicken.
I’m afraid of heights, and even more afraid that if I did any bungee jumping that I’d lose my foot…or worse!
I would love to rock climb a serious mountain but I am a bit afraid of heights and not very athletic at all! I can dream though. =)
I would love to go to Australia but since I really hate to fly I’ll never make that dream come true.
I would love a helicopter tour, but me and heights and the thought of falling… not gonna happen anytime soon! Handsome guy on the cover!!! (*)
I would love to do bungee jumping off a bridge, but I keep having images of the cord breaking and being flung through the air. Everyone makes it look fun, but it freaks me out.
I love your cover, nothing like a hunk in a flap jacket! All the best for your release!
I would love to learn to ride a horse…well. Maybe someday!
Thanks Karyn! The Blaze art department always does a fabulous job! You should definitely take a few riding lessons…I’m sure you would love it. My mother-in-law learned to ride when she was well into her fifties and she still rides today.
Hi! Great cover! I can practically feel the sand.
As yet another acrophobe, I wouldn’t want to jump out of a plane or off a cliff either. I have ridden horses though (they’re not that tall). What I thought would be interesting, but not for me, is ziplining above the trees. To go from tree to tree above the ground sounds very fun, but I doubt I’ll ever do that.
I always wanted to go to Australia too, but I just can’t face being in a plane for so long. Afraid of heights and enclosed spaces.
Hi Karen! I would also love to skydive, but am too terrified to actually go do it. Some friends of went, and they said it was amazing, but that training really only consists of about 5 minutes of the instructors telling you how to hold your hands above your head. I would need days of training before I felt comfortable enough to even think about skydiving!
I would love to go white water rafting, but I can’t swim and don’t know if it would be a great idea. I also hope that someday I’ll be brave enough to try bungee jumping.
I’d love to go to bed with George Clooney, but alas, I’m afraid to do so because my husband might not appreciate it (nor would George or his current fling), LOL!
There are two things I have always wanted to do. One is skydive. I took my class to a local place last year and it got me thinking about it again. Just to free fall and the rush that comes with this. The other is to drive a NASCAR car. i think it would be the greatest rush of my life to feel the pull of the car in the corners. What a rush all around. Thanks for the great stories Karen
And the winners are….Linda Henderson and Cories!! Congratulations, ladies, and thank you to everyone who stopped by! Linda and Cories, send your snail mail address to me at karenefoley@comcast.net, and I’ll put a copy of Hot-Blooded into the mail for you! Have a great day, everyone!
Congrats Linda & Cories! (*)
Wow! Thank you!
