How many of you knew that? If you’re Scottish, you might be aware that January 25th is the night that the Scots celebrate the birthday of their favorite poet Robert Burns, but I had no idea. I found out because I’ve become addicted to a catalog and website called Gaelsong, which offers all sorts of lovely things from Ireland and Scotland. So naturally they sent me an email announcing the celebration in case I needed to purchase stuff for my Burns Night party. I don’t know about you, but I’m up for a holiday in January. We need one, don’t you think?

I don’t have a ton of info on Robert Burns, but I do know that he wrote Auld Lang Syne (probably just the words, not the music), and that’s quite a legacy. Just about everybody recognizes the song when it’s played or sung on New Year’s Eve. I suppose it’s appropriate to sing it on Burns Night, too, so there you have one of your activities all set for you.

Of course you’ll eat, too, but the traditional food served on Burns night might give you pause. I understand haggis is a staple of the Burns Night meal, and I have it on good authority (Rhonda Nelson) that it may not be what you want to consume. There’s innards involved, if you get my drift. But if you cast around, you might find some Scottish dishes that appeal to you.

And if you don’t, then just drink. Whiskey is always appropriate on Burns Night. In fact, I’ll bet you can even find a T-shirt that says “Tonight I drink for Scotland” on it and then you’ll truly be in the spirit of the occasion. Or you can decide to go for the haggis, after all. Maybe it’s not so bad if you drink enough whiskey with it. Personally, after finding out what it’s made from, I’m not eager.

So how about it? Are you up for Burns Night? Maybe even haggis? Speaking of that, what was the most disgusting thing you ever ate in your life?

I don’t drink, but I’ll have a Diet coke in honor of Burns. When I was in Australia the first time and on a ‘property’ (ranch), they told me I was eating kangaroo meat. I find out years later that it wasn’t. Another time in Australia (yeah, I seem to eat weird food there), I was at a Chinese restaurant with some Chinese nationals (totally in Chinatown) and I am not sure what was on the table. Not sure I want to know. I only ate what I could recognize.

    Hey, I’d buy that T-shirt!

The absolute most disgusting thing I’ve ever eaten was Rocky Mountain Oysters. Ewww. Someone told me if I liked Chicken gizzards, I’d love these. NOT!

    A Toast to Burns!

Cheers to Burns! But no innards for me please. Can’t remember what the most disgusting thing would be mainly because if I smell it and it stinks I won’t eat it!

  4. Hi, Katie! So glad you didn’t eat Kanga, after all. I’m a Winnie the Pooh fan, and I can’t imagine eating kangaroo!

Angela, I’ve never eaten rocky mountain oysters, although there’s a club (or was) in town called the Rocky Mountain Oyster Club and I had a friend who swore those things were delicious. No thanks!

Marcie, that smell test works for me, too! Can you imagine being on Survivor? I’d never make it.

    Here’s to Robbie Burns, everyone!

Had no idea it was Burns night! We do have a January holiday, Martin Luther King Day. It was recently. :) I’m not a whiskey lover but I have rum or brandy!

I’ve eaten a lot of innards but only one at a time & over years. I am a big fan of liver & onions but haven’t had any for years. I’ve also eaten sweetbreads which were quite tasty. I’ve tried heart, didn’t like it, tried tongue, didn’t like it. I’ve eaten all kinds of fish & wild game. When my daughter & her husband lived in Colorado they ate buffalo which is delicious. I’ve also had elk, venison (deer), antelope, squirrel, all manor of water fowl & different types of birds. My dad was a hunter & a fisherman as were friends after I was an adult so I’ve had the opportunity to try many things. Most were very delicious. Wild pig can taste better than the pork you buy in a store. My brother still hunts but has slowed down as he has gotten older. He hasn’t had good hunting luck in several years.

    Interesting subject!

  6. Hi, Donna! At some point I did slap my forehead and go “wait, we do have a holiday in January,” but it was too late to change the blog. I wondered if anyone would notice that, LOL.

My, but you have the eclectic taste buds, lassie! A toast to you for being willing to try new foods, no matter whether they sound appetizing or not. I couldn’t imagine eating tongue, so if you, who seems to like a lot of things, didn’t care for it, then that tells me I probably wouldn’t like it. I do like liver, though. I suppose it’s all in our minds, huh?

  7. Tomorrow night, I’ll be toasting the Immortal Memory, eating haggis, and wearing wool. :)
